This language is painfully familiar to me as a Muslim New Yorker, and also as someone born in East Africa, and it's difficult for me to hear. It also reminds me that the silence that so often greets this kind of bigotry, this kind of Islamophobia, is what allows it to escalate — the temptation to treat it as normal politics.

And I want to be very clear that I have far more urgent work to do than indulge the provocations of a man who trades in outrage and, frankly, fears the city we're looking to build — a city where every New Yorker who lives here can call it home.

I'm not ashamed of who I am, my faith, or being the first Muslim mayor in our city's history. No amount of racism will change how I lead or my commitment to every New Yorker.
