After winning the Stanley Cup with the Capitals, Barry Trotz joined the Islanders and turned the worst defensive team in the NHL into the best the following season. He then led them to back-to-back conference finals. As good a head coach as there is.
Some talk around the team suggests the relationship between coach and some players (and Lou) may have gotten a little bumpy this season.
That said, a new system may exploit the Isles’ offensive game and I suspect that’s part of the reasoning.
#Isles News: New York Islanders President and General Manager Lou Lamoriello announced today that Barry Trotz has been relieved of his duties as Head Coach.
@nicolefshirman I’m kind of out of it but seems like Lou sees the end and isn’t looking for anything but a veteran that gets the final drops out of an aging roster. Love that idea though
@habermetrics Almost feels like Lou is panicking a bit bc he sees his end coming soon with his and the roster’s ages. Trotz made some amazing memories in a few short years with a very mediocre roster. Whole thing seems very short-sighted and weird
@PFF_College He’s not big but he’s not tiny either. And has an impressive resume of making high point, contested catches over guys. He’s flying under the radar bc this WR class is loaded with good WRs. But it feels like he’s either going to surprise ppl how early he goes, or end up a steal
@NHLRumorsDaily Wait this makes ZERO sense for the Islanders to do though. They’re not making the playoffs and he’s a UFA that will cost premium assets they need more of, not less of. Literally couldn’t think of a trade that makes less sense
@jey69404049@mannyplaysbass@JFreshHockey Don’t see the problem with trading away Lafreniere while he still has the only positive thing he brings to the game going: scoring off of tap-ins. The second that’s gone he’s not an NHL player. He doesn’t even play good D to stick in the bottom 6 🤣
Trade him before it’s too late
@hockeystatcards Perfect.
Bailey, Lee, Pageau.
Parise, Palmieri, Barzal.
Those 2 lines Made it so clear what the issue has been. Trotz is 100% going to ignore it anyways but good to see the proof so clear
@RTaub_ Parise finally had someone willing and able to pass to him. Barzal finally had someone who could skate, forecheck and help defensively on his wing. We’ve all been calling for the winger changes forever now
@Bmd572@AGrossNewsday Well this is just not true at all…
I always pay attention to who’s giving full effort and Lee has been consistently full effort as usual. It’s just he is slower and reactive instead of proactive. He’s just not as quick, even in front of the net, and it’s been killing his game
@nicolefshirman Oh yea true. ik you were, just way too many people actually seem to think they’d trade Lundell for anyone. That was like a reflexive response at this point😂
