And with that one job, they could:

• Take a vacation once in a while
• Retire without panic

If you worked more than 40 hours, people thought something was wrong.

Now if you work only 40 hours, people think something is wrong with you.

Housing used to cost 2x your annual income.

Now it is 8x to 12x, depending on your city.

And that is if you can even find a home that has not been swallowed by private equity.

You could support a family on a single income.
Today two incomes barely keep the lights on.

A hospital visit did not bankrupt you.
Food was not a luxury purchase.
You did not need a financing plan for dental work.

Back then, overtime meant you were saving for a boat or a vacation.

Now overtime means you are trying not to fall behind.

The story we are told is that “people today just don’t want to work.”

No.

People today are working harder than ever.

They are juggling multiple jobs.
They are answering emails at night.
They are hustling on weekends.
They are selling their time, their energy, their peace.

And what do they get in return?

Rent that goes up faster than wages.
Groceries priced like luxury goods.
Healthcare that feels like a hostage negotiation.
Retirement that looks more like a fantasy than a plan.

The American Dream did not die.
It was priced out, extracted, and sold off to the highest bidder.

We are living in the wealthiest country in human history.
Yet millions cannot afford a home, a family, or a future.

That is not progress. That is failure.

Today is a good day to learn about one of the worst Supreme Court decisions in recent history:

Tennessee v. Garner (1985)

Most of American history used the "fleeing felon" English common law standard: if you engage in fresh pursuit of a thief without unreasonable delay, then you can use lethal force.

In 1985, the Supreme Court invented a new standard. It said that under the Fourth Amendment, shooting a fleeing felon was an "unreasonable seizure".

This was not what the Founders meant. This was not considered "unreasonable" at any moment before that moment in time. This was not an originalist interpretation. This was six men inventing a new standard, from whole cloth.

So now it's illegal to shoot a felon who is running away from you everywhere in America. Even if your state says it's legal, too bad.

Even worse, it's basically impossible to change. It would take a constitutional amendment or the Supreme Court overruling its own recent precedent to change it, two incredibly unlikely events.

So now good men like Orest Schur go to jail, while criminals can steal without fear.

tl;dr - in 1985 four democrats and two boomer republicans made it illegal to defend your property with lethal force, undoing hundreds of years of American and English legal tradition

If you're wondering how things like this happen, Michigan is full of Asian companies supplying the auto industry.

In the early 2000s, Michigan got hit with the Emerald Ash Borer which has killed tens of millions of ash trees just in out state alone. It was first identified in Canton, Michigan, home to numerous Asian tier 1 suppliers to the Big Three auto companies.

It has since spread across the country and caused an incalculable amount of damage both economically and aesthetically.

I remember it vividly because my parent's house used to be surrounded by ash trees and by the time I was in high school they were all dead or dying, with no chance to save them.

This is why re-shoring manufacturing to America is not just a desire, it's a necessity. When our IP isn't being ripped off, we're being invaded by foreign parasites picking at the soft underbelly of the country.
