Today we pause to reflect on the sacrifices made by 2003 Columbia search volunteers Charles Krenek, of the Texas Forest Service, and helicopter pilot Jules “Buzz” Mier, Jr. On this day 23 years ago, they gave their lives when a helicopter went down in San Augustine County.
The Patricia Huffman Smith NASA Museum ‘Remembering Columbia’ is saddened to share the passing of retired employee “L.J.” Schrieber. He retired from the museum in 2023 after 12 years of service.

The Patricia Huffman Smith NASA Museum is now accepting applications for its annual ‘Remembering Columbia’ Memorial Scholarship, awarded to students pursuing a college degree in a STEAM field.

We also honor the sacrifices made by thousands of selfless volunteers throughout the recovery effort, especially Charles Krenek of the Texas Forest Service and helicopter pilot Jules 'Buzz' Mier, Jr., who on March 27, 2003, gave their lives in the effort to bring Columbia home.
