Back. Our. Girls. In. Green. 🇮🇪
Ahead of Friday’s World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan and Tuesday’s return fixture at Páirc Uí Chaoimh, our U17s and U19s have been blazing a trail of their own: four European qualifiers in ten days.
Combined score: 35-0.
U17s
28 Sep: Ireland 16-0 Azerbaijan
1 Oct: Ireland 2-0 Albania
4 Oct: Kosovo 0-6 Ireland
U19s
7 Oct: Ireland 11-0 Armenia
Whatever the level of the opposition, you can only beat what’s in front of you, and they’ve done it at a canter.
These players are a credit to the coaches, clubs and families putting in the hours, often with little support behind them.
With the senior side chasing another World Cup in Brazil 2027, it’s more important than ever to back them.
Women’s football is one of the world’s fastest-growing sports, but there are still bridges to build if we’re to ride this wave.
For one, the well-documented jump from U19 to senior level is too big for most players, and many fall out of the system.
An U23 team is the natural solution, giving players meaningful games, keeping them on the radar and easing that step up.
That needs investment from the FAI and government, plus consistent, thoughtful marketing.
Honestly, I constantly see the bulk of the “blame” for women’s football (and sport) pushed onto men.
Everyone has a personal responsibility, and it shouldn’t take a partner or daughter to get a man interested.
But you can’t fake interest, and if you force it down people’s throats or demonise those who don’t share it, you’ll always get pushback.
We all have a role to play, but I think women also have a responsibility to support each other more.
Plenty of women enjoy sport, but how many follow men’s sport rather than women’s?
There’s a constant cognitive dissonance in women not supporting women while attending men’s events. It’ll never make sense to me.
Yes, everyone should do their bit to learn about and support women’s sport, irrespective of gender.
But if we want to make an occasion of women’s events and have young girls aspiring to be the next Katie Taylor, we all need to look inward before pinning blame on anyone else.
Best of luck to the squad this week.

🚨 Caoimhín Kelleher on why he refused the handshake with Dor Peretz:
🎙️ “I know people will talk about the handshake, and I understand why. But for me, this wasn’t about disrespecting Dor Peretz as a person. It was about making a statement about what is happening around this situation. Sometimes you have to decide where you stand, even when people don’t agree with you.”
“I wore the captain’s armband tonight, and I knew what that responsibility meant. Respect doesn’t always mean pretending everything is normal. We had already made our position clear before the game, and this was another way of showing that we weren’t going to ignore what is happening.”
“And yes, this has happened before. Dara O’Shea made the same decision in the first game, so nobody should be pretending this suddenly came out of nowhere. Tonight I simply carried on what the team had already decided.”
“Football is supposed to bring people together, but sometimes football also becomes a platform for saying something bigger than the 90 minutes. People can disagree with the decision, they can criticise me, they can criticise Ireland that’s football. But don’t confuse a political protest with hatred for another player.”
Fascinating to see this propaganda machine in full flow. There is zero basis for any of these claims; no evidence, no Irish player(s) named, no complaint to UEFA.
They threw it out to deflect from their own fans monkey chants; their media & influencers have taken it from there.
🗣️"THEY HAVE A PROPAGANDA MACHINE DENYING WHAT THEIR STATE ARE DOING TO THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE"
🗣️"THE IRISH MEDIA SHOULDN'T HAVE HAD TO BE THERE. WE SHOULDN'T BE PLAYING THE MATCH!"
