In Japan, when someone compliments you, the correct response is to deny it.
Accepting compliments directly = arrogant, self-centered
Deflecting compliments = humble, modest, considerate
It’s called “kenson” (謙遜) - humility/modesty.
It’s not just polite. It’s expected.
“Iie iie” (No no)
“Sonna koto nai desu” (That’s not true)
“Mada mada desu” (I’m still not there yet)
“Zenzen dame desu” (It’s completely terrible)
“Tondemo nai desu” (Absolutely not)
Even if they know they did well, they’ll deny it.
Japanese modesty culture means:
•Nobody can openly be proud of their achievements
•Everyone downplays their skills
•Compliments turn into denial battles
It’s meant to prevent arrogance but sometimes it just means nobody can feel good about themselves publicly.
