Excited to attend my first @cogsci_soc this week! If you are into perception, aesthetics, individual differences, context effects, Bayesian, open source programming, and more find me at #CogSci2024! On Saturday (Perception3) I present work I did with @norijacoby at the @MPI_ae ⬇️
“Characterizing Similarities and Divergences in Conversational Tones in Humans and LLMs by Sampling with People” is a collaboration with @dm_brandonH, @polvanrijn, @sucholutsky, @RajaMarjieh, @norijacoby our pre-print is available here:

To explore the sentences we sampled using SP, we also use UMAP to compute sentence embeddings. We find that regions of this sentence embedding scatter plot correspond to specific conversational topics and tones, such as the correspondence of (vi) to a more relational tone. 6/
With 1,339 human participants, 33,370 human judgments, and 29,900 GPT queries, we demonstrate how combining ideas from machine learning and cognitive science can address challenges in human-computer interactions. 13/
We found that humans and GPT are different in their use of conversational tones. We observed a large difference in the frequency of usage of tones such as excited, grateful, and concerned. 5/
The first tool is Sampling with People (SP). It recruits humans to alternate between annotating tones for sentences and creating sentences for given tones, forming an unbiased sample of both, as SP implements a Gibbs’ Sampler with people. We repeat the process for LLMs. 4/
By combining advancements in cognitive science and machine learning, we propose a series of tools that address human-AI alignment in conversational tones. 3/
Conversational tones—how we express manners and attitudes—are key to effective communication. With LLM agents becoming omnipresent, understanding similarities & differences in conversational tones between humans and LLMs is crucial. What are the key parallels and divergences? 2/
