everyone keeps saying crypto is bringing stocks onchain.
but most people still don't know what they're actually buying.
because "stocks on crypto exchanges" can mean completely different things depending on the platform. 🧵
before comparing products, let's clear something up.
there are 3 ways crypto platforms give you stock exposure:
1. real shares
actual ownership of a company.
if you buy a share of NVDA, you own NVDA through a regulated brokerage structure. dividends and shareholder benefits work the way you'd expect.
2. tokenized stocks
tokens designed to track a real stock.
the price follows the underlying company, but you're holding a tokenized representation rather than the share itself.
3. derivatives
you're not buying the stock at all.
you're simply trading its price movement.
all three can look similar from the outside.
they're not.
Bitget
Bitget has become one of the biggest players in tokenized stocks.
the appeal is obvious: lots of assets, crypto-native access, and trading that isn't restricted to traditional market hours.
for many users, that's exactly what they're looking for.
but the important distinction is that you're getting exposure through tokenized assets, not directly holding the underlying shares.
nothing wrong with that.
it's just a different product.
Binance
Binance is going after scale.
their stock offering covers thousands of equities and ETFs, making it one of the broadest selections available to crypto users.
depending on where you live, access and product structure can vary, which makes the experience a little harder to compare across regions.
the big advantage is choice.
the tradeoff is that understanding exactly what you're buying sometimes requires digging a bit deeper.
Ondo / xStocks
these aren't exchanges.
they're the infrastructure behind much of the tokenized stock ecosystem.
a lot of the products users interact with on exchanges are built on top of platforms like these.
their job isn't really to compete with exchanges.
it's to provide the rails that make tokenized equities possible in the first place.
MEXC RealStocks
this is where things start to look different.
instead of offering a token that tracks a stock, @MEXC RealStocks is built around access to actual US equities through its brokerage partner structure.
so when someone buys a stock, the goal isn't simply price exposure.
it's ownership of the underlying share.
that means things like dividend eligibility and shareholder participation are tied to the actual stock rather than a tokenized representation.
there are tradeoffs.
the catalog is smaller than what Binance offers.
and trading follows market hours instead of running 24/7.
but that's also because it's designed around the real market rather than a synthetic version of it.
which brings me to the question I think more people should be asking:
when you buy "stocks" through a crypto platform...
do you want ownership?
or do you want exposure?
both are valid.
some people care about direct ownership.
others care more about convenience, accessibility, and being able to trade around the clock.
neither approach is automatically better.
they're just solving different problems.
the important thing is understanding the difference before you hit buy.
because as more stocks move into crypto, knowing what you actually own is going to matter a lot more than people think.
