Stalin's war preparations had Hitler absolutely shook. Not only did Stalin foresee (against the plans of key strategists) Hitler's key strategy of drawing Soviet troops to the border, but when the Germans got into the country they couldn't believe how advanced it was 😭
On this day in 1953, General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Joseph Stalin passed away.
In 24 years under Stalin’s leadership, from the ashes of the Russian Civil War, the Soviet Union transformed from a feudal, backward society, into an industrial and military superpower which crushed Nazi Germany in World War 2.
Here are just some achievements of the Soviet Union during Stalin’s leadership:
•Soviet industrial output increased roughly 4–5 times between 1928 and 1940 during the Five-Year Plans.
• Steel production rose from about 4 million tons in 1928 to around 18 million tons by 1940.
• Coal production increased from roughly 35 million tons in 1928 to about 166 million tons by 1940.
• Electricity generation grew from about 5 billion kWh in 1928 to nearly 48 billion kWh by 1940, almost a 10-fold increase.
• The number of tractors in Soviet agriculture rose from about 1,300 in 1928 to over 500,000 by 1940, massively mechanising farming.
• The Soviet Union built over 9000 large industrial enterprises during the First and Second Five-Year Plans, including major steel, mining, and engineering complexes.
• Life expectancy rose from roughly 32 years in 1913 under the Tsar, to around 47–50 years by the early 1950s.
• The number of doctors increased from about 19,800 in 1913 to more than 120,000 by 1950.
• Hospital beds expanded from about 208,000 in 1913 to more than 790,000 by 1950.
• Literacy in the Soviet Union rose from around 28% in 1897 to roughly 87–90% by the late 1930s.
• The number of students in higher education increased from around 112,000 in 1914 to more than 1.5 million by 1950.
• By the early 1950s the Soviet Union was producing over 70% of the world’s tractors and nearly 50% of its combine harvesters.
• During the World War II the Soviet economy relocated over 1500 factories east of the Urals, preserving industrial capacity and enabling massive wartime production.
•Roughly 3 in every 4 Germans fighting for Hitler that died in World War 2 were killed by the Red Army.
•Stalin stayed in the Soviet capital of Moscow, refusing to evacuate and let the city fall, boosting morale of the Red Army and led the command of the defence of Moscow.
• Between 1945 and 1950 Soviet industrial output doubled, making it one of the fastest post-war recoveries in modern economic history.
•By the early 1950s, the Soviet Union had over 100 cities with populations exceeding 100,000, compared to only a few dozen before the revolution.
• By the late 1940s the Soviet Union had more engineers graduating annually than any other country in Europe.
•Left the Soviet Union powerful enough to support socialist countries and national liberation struggles across the global south.
You should not trust the “anti-imperialism” of Orwell, who personally carried out brutal colonial violence against Burmese people, and justified it as “orientals” being “provoking.” Even his self-aggrandizing critiques of imperialism are littered with racist assumptions
the fact that he worked as an anti-communist informant at the end of his life, shows that he never really stopped being a cop. Even in death, his lasting legacy is being a useful idiot for the West’s Cold War anti-communism in high school English classes
I think Stalin's visceral and extremely angry reaction in 1948 was quite rational. You give Tito a country and army for free, and then he stabs you in the back and goes hat in hand to the demonic West. That's why he told Chervenkov that "there is nothing Slavic about these scum."
In 2003, opposing the Iraq war made you a "Saddam apologist."
In 2011, opposing the Libya war made you a "Qaddafi apologist."
That same year, rejecting regime change in Syria made you an "Assad apologist."
Now, in 2025, warning against a war on ran makes you a "Mullah apologist."
Two decades in, the pattern is obvious: the so-called apologists were right. The war hawks were not.
