Neonatal AKI: 30% and 3 are Important Numbers.
In this systematic review of acute kidney injury in neonates, data from 201 observational studies showed significant heterogeneity of pooled estimates. On meta-analysis, point estimate of AKI incidence (any stage) was 30%, and that of mortality in AKI was 30%. Compared to infants without AKI, those with AKI had a 3-fold higher mortality (odds ratio 3.4). Risk factors were the well-known ones: perinatal asphyxia, sepsis, PDA, NEC, and nephrotoxic medications. #neotwitter #acutekidneyinjury #nephrology

Thing I learned today: power outages are very hard for toddlers to understand. My son was very angry that I was “withholding” his morning train show….. the amount of times we had to keep trying to turn on the TV a was comical.
