@HardeepPhull@JonathanDean_ Hello Hardeep. It’s Adrienne, once upon a time your editor at Culture. Just wondering how you were - really because I went to a public interview with your fellow Sikh Satnam Sanghera. Have you read his books? If you have time, drop me a line.
@AdamRutherford@nathancofnas Music and not in other professions. Not having experience of being interviewed myself I blithely stated “Because they were allowed to “. My muso friends did complain that I should have also talked about singing in churches and African music on plantations etc.
@AdamRutherford@nathancofnas Mainly of the early 20th century. There was a minor disagreement about how far the early recording industry led to racial mixing - my information was most of the discs were bought by working class blacks. @AdamRutherford He chose Dire Straits’ Money For Nothing and described an alcoholic near breakdown, which he wrote about in more detail elsewhere. He is the only dry alcoholic I have read that admitted that sobriety meant he lost something, for him in the intensity of his reaction to the arts.
@AdamRutherford Did you ever come across Professor John Sutherland at UCL or was he completely before your time? I was remembering a piece he wrote for me long ago. It was for a column called Going For A Song where the writer chose a track that was significant to them and wrote about it and why.
@AdamRutherford If you can find time would like to recommend you watch a 1984 film called The Big Chill. Directed and largely written by Lawrence Kasdan with Glen Close William Hurt Kevin Kline etc. Important to my generation. Maybe you could tell your son these really are baby boomers.
@NPortnell Yes. They are all good. Also recommend solo album Warm Nights by Robert Forster, one of the duo with Grant McLennan who are basically the band.
@DrMaryBurke@parisreview@petergraarupw I taught Larkin to a small group of A Level students once. I remember one boy said to me that he didn’t think it was a good idea for Larkin to be taught to young people like him “because they might think the world was like that and it didn’t have to be “.
