The Kenya Ports Authority today led a multi-agency team in a major oil spill response drill. The exercise took place at the Port of Mombasa, reaffirming the authority’s commitment to upholding maritime safety and environmental protection within the port.

The exercise spanning the entire day demonstrated the Authority’s operational readiness, and capability to manage emergencies resulting from marine pollution control, with seamless coordination with other multi-agency teams.

Speaking before the exercise, the Harbor master and general manager marine operations, Capt. Patrick Ondenyi, representing the Managing Director, Capt. William Ruto, emphasized significance of the exercise to the port community, noting that oil spill management requires multi-faceted approach because of its complex in nature.

“Today’s initiative strengthens confidence among shipping lines, oil terminal operators, and the wider business community, while protecting livelihoods tied to the blue economy and reinforcing port’s position as a trusted maritime hub,” he remarked.

The drill was conducted at the Kipevu Oil Terminal with key participation of the other government agencies and stakeholders, notably the Kenya Maritime Authority, Kenya Navy, Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC), and other partners. It was coordinated under the Oil Spill Mutual Assistance Group (OSMAG), a renowned consortium of oil terminals, shipping lines, and regulators that pools resources for joint pollution response.

During the exercise, KPA deployed tugboats and pilot boats, critical assets that enhance Kenya’s marine pollution response capability. These drills play a crucial role in fulfilling Kenya's obligations under MARPOL, activating the National Oil Spill Contingency Plan, and safeguarding sensitive coastal ecosystems.

If I were asked to write or speak about Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga, I would need years to do him justice. But here, for now, is my humble attempt…

One of the few times I was truly terrified for Baba’s health was when he contracted COVID-19. He called me from Nairobi Hospital and asked me to release the news to the public. Even then, he had the strength to crack a dark joke: “I’m told even our neighbor, President John Pombe Magufuli, is here. But I’m fine—my vitals are fine, my oxygen levels are fine. Go tell the public.” I was managing his social media accounts at the time, so it fell to me to inform the nation. What followed were weeks of pure terror. I would arrive at his home in Karen some days to find he had regressed—back on oxygen, with no visitors allowed. Yet even in that terrible state, he would call me over to have lunch with him, just to spend time together. I found it difficult to watch him eat and struggle through conversation with tubes delivering oxygen, interrupting his speech. But somehow, he pulled through. He survived that scare.

Back then, I was scared. Today, I am not fearful—just profoundly sad. Baba had prepared me in his own way for the inevitability of death. What intrigued him most was what lay beyond. “This is a conversation only the dead will have,” he would say, then let out that infectious, slow-building laugh of his.
