Random Sunday Thoughts #236
1. Recently, I reposted a quote stating that in the next several years, domain names will be the most valuable asset on corporate balance sheets. My point, and I believe my friend who said it, was to drive home the actuality that exact match brand and category defining .com domain names are growing in strategic importance and appreciating in asset value as AI reshapes search, discovery, and brand authority. One comment regarding the above came from an incredibly smart and successful college buddy. He wrote, " I read your post this week. You’ve been dead right about domains for decades. But… having them be the single most valuable asset on balance sheets of most companies in 5-10 years would mean we are in an EXTENDED global depression multiple times larger and longer than we have ever seen. I’m not even sure how this could occur to this scale, it would have to be caused by some sort of gravity plague or something that stops all factory production, innovation ,services, food shipments etc. making all other assets essentially useless. And this would have to start soon. If domains are the most valuable assets then we are in real real trouble and I’m not even sure holding cash, bonds, let alone equity, would be smart! Maybe gold?" My conclusion from this was twofold; he acknowledged how valuable the best .com domains have been for decades, while questioning the hyperbole, and for that he is likely correct as well. Although, it is ironic that some of his remarks preceded the scariest week since the birth of the Internet, with major online security breaches, and some pretty dire warnings from the most respected tech leaders and even the UK government. Maybe Gold is a good idea, which would be music to the ears of my friends at market leader Gold .com, a domain which I sold to them. As always, the reality or actuality likely lies somewhere in between (cont 👇)
Tech companies are paying $227,000 just to APPLY for new domain extensions.
Meanwhile, founders are still debating whether $5,000 is too much for a .com.

The first wave of .si is over.
Domain investors showed up. Startups and end users? Not so much.
It’s still early, but unless real-world adoption accelerates, I expect wholesale prices to begin a gradual decline.
Speculation fueled wave one. Adoption will have to fuel wave two.
