🧵 This is a story about a tremendous young man who made a difficult decision in a baseball recruiting climate that has changed dramatically since 2021.
@PetersTwpSports RHP @DavidOberschelp has had an incredible season thus far. In his last 3 section games… he has gone:
20 Innings📊
4 earned runs 👨⚖️
21Ks 🎟️
5 Walks 🚷
3-0 record 🥇🥇🥇
He has a fastball he can run up to 88/89 mph and several secondary pitches that play off each other.
He pitches at Peters Township against neighboring communities who have a long reputation for producing baseball talent. To beat them- you have to be damn good. Pre transfer portal- this type of resume would have warranted opportunity at his #1 choice : Penn State. Put the new reality of power 4 baseball doesn’t allow for people with David’s current size & skill set to go right into a School like PSU….sit and develop ….and be ready in three or four years to contribute to the team’s success. That’s not a knock on Penn State. I’m very friendly with the staff and Coach Gambino has been to PVS on multiple occasions. He’s as honest as they come & a damn good coach. This is just the way it is now.
So people in David’s position are faced with a dilemma. Forgo the traditional 4 year college experience in favor of playing at a smaller school or junior college putting up stats, putting on size and then moving on for a chance to play at a school like Penn State. In the end, David decided he wanted more from his college experience than to jump around from school to school. So he will attend Penn State. He will not play Big10 baseball there. It must’ve been a very difficult decision….but it is one that many high school players face. A traditional college experience at a fine institution- or the uncertain path of multiple schools/ transferring credits etc. it’s a topic @BluebookBeede discusses often.

The game is in an awful state.
I scouted professionally for two organizations over a ten-year period, and a lot of what we’re seeing today is being misunderstood or flat-out misrepresented.
First, velocity. Pitchers are not throwing significantly harder across the board. The perceived jump in velocity is primarily the result of technology and measurement changes — specifically where the device picks the baseball up out of the hand. As radar and tracking systems moved closer and closer to release, the readings increased. The arm didn’t change — the measurement did.
Now hitting.
We’ve reached a point where “gurus” who never played the game at a high level are applying golf swing principles to baseball, largely because golf embraced analytics to identify the most efficient swing paths. The problem is that a baseball bat is not a golf club.
In golf, you dump the club to get it on plane.
In baseball, you cannot lose the barrel on the back side and still stay on plane consistently.
Yet the tech community began preaching backside barrel dump as the answer. Front offices filled with non-baseball “propeller head” GMs bought into the presentations, and this philosophy was pushed aggressively through the minor leagues. I saw this coming as early as 2014.
The result?
Hitters now dump the barrel in an attempt to get on plane, but they:
• Struggle to stay inside the baseball
• Lose adjustability
• Operate with slower effective bat speed
On the pitching side, it’s no better.
Pitchers are taught max effort on every pitch. Starters rarely exceed 90 pitches or five innings, work almost exclusively to either arm side or glove side, and live in deep counts. Relievers are almost universally max effort, arm-side only.
The consequence is obvious:
• Poor command
• Inconsistent control
• Little ability to sequence or adjust
Despite all the technology, pitching command and overall feel are as bad as I’ve ever seen at the big-league level.
More data didn’t make the game smarter.
It just made it louder — and in many cases, worse.
