Over the years I’ve had the honour of making friends children their birthday cakes but today I got to make MY son’s first birthday cake and it’s filled my heart with so much joy. I made it in the shape of his favourite thing- bread!

Despite all the advice, I have never googled things as much as I have done in the past 6 months! Mostly late at night, often in a heightened state. But even at that state, I kept in mind if the information came from a credible source or not. Checked my references!

All in all becoming a parent is tough and, a bit like academia, the mental toil isn't always talked about before you start on that journey. You might be prepared in some ways but in other completely lost and feeling alone.

Dealing with a barrage of advice is something all new parent has to cope with- its mostly unsolicited and is somewhat structured in the "its more of a comment than a question" much like all Q&As I experienced at conference. Smile, nod and mostly ignore!

I've been super quiet on here lately as I have been working on quite an all consuming project for the past 6 months...becoming a mum! Its been a roller coaster but it has dawned on me that my career in academia has prepared me for it in a very odd ways...a 🧵
