It feels like people have become a bit numb to a player being 5th in the NL in pitching WAR while also having a 156 OPS+.
I remain astounded, and if the season ended today he should win MVP unanimously.
Don’t take this greatness for granted.
@AllAcesCards@MLBNetwork@Plesac19 Jeez, last year only 23 pitchers in the NL qualified. I’d like to see a line graph of this sort of data over the years.
Only 8 teams had 2 or more qualify and the Braves had 0. The World Series champs had just 1.
This is one I've been thinking about for a while.
Brandon Marsh has the 2nd highest BABIP in history, to Ty Cobb.
It's not a fluke. It's a thing he does. A story about being indefensible and how he's more like Freddie Freeman than you'd think..

@AllAcesCards I want to see Bobby play more. His numbers are very exciting, I haven’t had a chance to see him much.
I have been so lucky to watch this streak from Cris Sanchez though. You would loooove it.
@AllAcesCards Fair, but I think there’s some numbing to Ohtani’s greatness at play.
If 10 years ago a guy was hitting .270 with 8 homers and a 0.73 ERA over 49 IP before June I think things might be different. It’s astounding stuff.
But agree to disagree.
Take a moment to consider what we're watching.
Longest scoreless inning streaks by LHP since 1900:
Carl Hubbell - 45 1/3 IP, 1933
Doc White - 45 IP, 1904
Cristopher Sanchez - 44 2/3 IP, 2026*
*-And he's still going!
@AllAcesCards He pitched a billion innings and still managed at age 45 to lead the AL in Games Finished with a 3.07 ERA. Peak Satchel must have been outrageous.
@AllAcesCards 100%. Also agree Trout is a reach for that list.
Unrelatedly, I just read Larry Tye’s big biography of Satchel Paige. You might like it. What an Ace. I’m convinced he is a top 8ish pitcher all-time. Remarkable.
Proposal for a variable “qualifying” pitcher standard to better match the current SP environment - average the top 10 annually and multiply by 75%. Here’s how that would look relative to the fixed 162inn standard over the last 10 years (excluding 2020):
2025: 147.1
2024: 148.1
2023: 151.0
2022: 152.2
2021: 147.2
2019: 158.0
2018: 157.1
2017: 154.1
2016: 166.0
2015: 168.0
Borrowing part of @tangotiger’s proposed methodology, seems like the right solution might be using the lesser of (a) 162inn or (b) 75% of the average of the top 10 innings pitched leader for the season.
Aaron Nola has a 72 ERA plus over his last 27 starts.
Can someone with Stathead access see what precedents exist for a starting pitcher who posts two seasons of a sub-80 ERA+ then manages to become capable again? Especially when the two seasons are in their 30s.
Skeptical.
9 of Aaron Nola’s last 27 starts have been quality starts. He has a 6.02 ERA in that time. Don Mattingly’s hooks with him have been quick, understandably so. More than 4½ years left on the $172M contract. Makes the speed of Andrew Painter’s development more important.
@CoreySeidman He has a 72 ERA+ over his last 27 starts. I like the guy, but how long can they keep sending him out there?
There’s gotta be someone who can be acquired cheaply who is 10-20% more effective than that. He needs time in the lab to rebuild his approach.
@podoffame Ha. I’m not holding out for 70+. I’m looking for 60.
Magical round number, bests the franchise record (Howard-58), and the non-Bonds/McGwire/Sosa NL record (Stanton-59).
@podoffame@notgaetti During the Phillies/Red Sox broadcast they claimed that entering tonight’s game Kyle Schwarber had the third-highest career OBP at Fenway behind Ted Williams and Will Clark!
Again, if you're looking for some good reading while you're celebrating this Philadelphia 76ers victory, might I suggest "Moses and the Doctor," which details the last moment of glory for the franchise. You've got some time between now and the next series.
