Providing timely, relevant, targeted satellite-based data for maritime surveillance to MS&EU bodies. Managed by @EU_Commission, implemented by @EMSA_EU.
We are delighted to welcome our users to our annual @CopernicusCMS training, hosted at @EMSA_EU. The sessions are being held today and will continue on 27th May.
Building on real-word cases and engaging discussions on maritime surveillance, participants shared valuable insights and highlighted challenges and opportunities to further enhance the #CMS service.

In the evening of 4th May 2025, JRCC Larnaca received information about a missing vessel that had lost contact after its last reported position near north-east Cyprus.
JRCC Larnaca coordinated a search-and-rescue operation, utilising CMS Earth Observation SAR imaging and Vessel Detection Service (VDS) to locate the vessel. An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle was deployed to confirm the vessel's position before the rescue team arrived.

CMS service is an essential resource for national authorities, enabling them to timely track vessels engaged in AIS spoofing or other potentially suspicious behaviour.
@CopernicusEU@EMSA_EU@defis_eu@esa@EU4Space
The @CopernicusCMS Vessel Detection Service (VDS) assists in identifying vessels of interest, such as this oil tanker, which was not transmitting an AIS signal.
Fast & targeted information can be lifesaving when used in cases such as search-and-rescue operations. CMS very-high res optical images, together with Enhanced Vessel Detection, enhance national authorities’ capacity to detect & monitor smaller vessels, such as this leisure boat.
Detecting vessels’ activities, such as rendezvous at sea as shown in this image, can help authorities to conduct on-site verifications and stop possible illegal activities.
As the maritime picture is changing rapidly, @CopernicusCMS quasi-real-time Earth Observation images and value-added products are a key tool for 🇪🇺EU national authorities, supporting them in their operations.
