Ukraine is heading into one of its hardest winter yet.
Blackouts, colder forecasts and shrinking resources are putting millions at risk.
@RedCrossUkraine and @IFRC network are scaling up support people who need it: https://t.co/Nls8d0UonN
As winter approaches, millions in Ukraine are facing another season without reliable heat, power, or access to basic necessities. @IFRC teams and the @RedCrossUkraine are working around the clock to provide cash assistance, essential equipment, and psychosocial support, but the needs continue to grow.
“People are exhausted. Some have no central heating, no gas for cooking - it’s a race for survival. This winter is not going to be a usual winter; it’s going to be very tough.” - Victor Nyambala, IFRC Operations Manager
Support is urgently needed to help families stay warm, safe, and resilient through the months ahead.
"Many families now need to choose - warmth, food, medicine." Compounding pressures of rolling blackouts, colder weather and rising costs mean this could be Ukraine’s toughest winter.

"The climate crisis is also a humanitarian crisis," @IkkalaNinni, the @IFRC climate change lead, told reporters in Geneva on Tuesday, ahead of #COP30.
She stressed that Red Cross and Red Crescent teams are responding daily to "more frequent floods, droughts, heatwaves and storms" placing lives, livelihoods, health, and food and water security under threat. https://t.co/AucUQB3t6o

Yesterday the rescue ship, Ocean Viking, managed by @SOSMedIntl & @ifrc came under fire in the Mediterranean. 87 rescued people and our humanitarian staff were on board. Humanitarians are #Notatarget.
📢Today is the #WorldHumanitarianDay.
Our @ifrc and @SOSMedIntl crew onboard Ocean Viking, coming from all around the globe, stands together for the life-saving mission we pursue in the Central Mediterranean.
Listen to what drives their humanitarian commitment.
Humanitarian workers must be protected. For the sake, quite simply, of humanity.
This #WorldHumanitarianDay we renew our calls louder:
- Respect: States must uphold international laws to protect humanitarians.
- Prevent: Immediate action from authorities to prevent further attacks.
- Accountability: There must be respect for those who died through consequences for those who killed them. Impunity in any place breeds impunity in every place.
- Support: Donors and organizations must invest in the safety and protection of all humanitarians– including training, protective equipment and insurance.
Together, we must #ProtectHumanity.
"Despite all the dangers we face, we have never thought of stopping our service or duties. No matter the fears and challenges, we are determined to continue our work and our service." - Sami Al-Emari, @PalestineRCS paramedic officer
Lately, attacks on humanitarian workers have risen at an alarming rate. Local humanitarians are the first to respond in any crisis, yet they are also the ones who bear the overwhelming brunt of violence and loss.
This #WorldHumanitarianDay, we stand in solidarity to demand the protection of humanitarian workers, both volunteers and staff. States must uphold international laws to protect humanitarians.
We must #ProtectHumanity.
Fires in Turkiye have forced tens of thousands to evacuate. Turkish @RedCrescent@Kizilay are providing critical support to communities affected and first responders.
