Continued cooling in wage growth data from the ECI this morning.
Year-over-year wage growth for private-sector workers is under 4% for the first time since 2021.
Today's JOLTS report was a glass half-empty vs. half-full report depending on which indicator you want to focus on.
Job postings down to 7.4m with 78% of the drop coming from southern states following Helene.

Unemployment ticked down to 4.1%.
September jobs: +254,000
July & August: Revised up +72,000
That brings the three-month average to 186k. Slower than ~250k last year, but above the 166k pace in 2019.

The fact that the hires rate was revised down -105k in July and keeps sliding is cause for concern, even given the historically low layoffs and uptick in openings.
Job openings ticking up to 8 million is promising, but the long-term trend is still a cooling labor market. Especially when you look at continued moves down in hiring and quitting.

Interesting divergence from recent trends in the labor force flows data.
The job-finding rate ticked up, while there was a surge in the share of employed workers moving into unemployment.

For now, there is no sign of a reversal in trends, especially given that Indeed Wage Tracker and other government data have continued to show signs of slowing pay growth in recent quarters.
ECI data comes in above expectations this morning, driven by a pick-up from last quarter. When you remove workers with more volatile pay (commissions, piece rates, etc...), there is still a clear year-over-year cooling trend.
