I think the "trans athlete debate" might be the current culture war that is most emblematic of the primary divide in this country right now. The reality vs the completely fabricated.

On one side, you have something that literally just isn't happening: Trans women infiltrating women's sports en masse. It isn't happening.

On the other side, you have troglodytic conservatives pretending publicly to care about women and children when they have spent every bit of political cache they have doing the exact opposite. Abolishing women's reproductive rights, stripping away food assistance programs that overwhelmingly support children.

Their problem, however, is massively twofold (at minimum):

1. Only the biggest losers on the planet really are willing to go in public and argue about this. Of ALL THE NBA PLAYERS IN HISTORY you have Enes Kanter (sucked, career grifter) and Royce White (scared of planes, can't win an election, career grifter) stumping for your cause. They are loud and FOX News, Outkick, et al. will platform them, but no one actually likes them. Royce White couldn't even win a primary this year. Not exactly inspiring figures with legitimate rallying cries.

2. Republican men only have so much time and energy to pretend they care about women's sports. This group deviates from the strange, obsessed anti-pedophile crowd who can spend all hours of the day and night pretending their core value set is to protect children, but worship our dual threat pedophile and pedophile protector president. Those guys have some real energy, but you're just not going to get these morons to pretend they're watching women's sports. Their argument on the youth level leans on this family man protecting the young persona, but that putters out when these loser weirdo's daughters progress into adolescence and their focus becomes no longer about "protecting" these young girls, but turning the young women they've become into the suppressed, meek wives they want them to now be.

Proposing this a few years ago would practically have gotten you censured. Cutting off all aid to Israel is now the majority position inside the House Democratic caucus.

Paxton, Gill, and Sarah Gonzales all used their rally speeches to bring up Talarico's 2023 interview on Superbloom.

Asked what he loved that wasn't "family or friends," Talarico said: "I love the trans children who showed up yesterday at the state capitol to advocate for their humanity."

In GOP messaging, this has become: Talarico is a weirdo who thinks about "trans kids" all day. (Gonzales said "check his hard drive!")

It's not exactly subtle, but: One of Talarico's premises is that he's a moral, Christian man running against a creep with a messy divorce.

The counterpunch from Rs: Talarico is a childless pervert, probably gay (where's the girlfriend he keeps talking about?). He awfully seems *concerned* about Ken Paxton's litigation against gender medicine for children, doesn't he?

It was predictable that TX Rs would go there. They got a media backlash to trans litigation/legislation in 2021, then swept the 2022 races. Message: This is a winning issue and we believe in it.

When Talarico got into this race, I asked him: Republicans cite scripture, usually Matthew 18:6, to explain why they legislate on this. Why are they wrong?

His answer:

"I think we agree that we need to protect children, and that's good. That's a solid piece of common ground that we should be able to come together on. You know, I think I just tend to trust parents to take care of their children more than I trust the government to take care of those children. I believe parental rights are sacred and shouldn't be overridden by politicians at the state capitol or the national capitol. So I think that's the primary difference on that issue."
