Our work is just getting started.
Join us FRIDAY, JUNE 26 @ City Hall Park to advocate for an affordable city for ALL Council employees.
More details to come. Follow @CouncilInterns for the latest updates!
@TrueSlazac I am not in favor of any elected official structuring their employment pipeline such that their advisors are disproportionately trust fund recipients or nepo babies
This is a public integrity and governance issue, as a voter I support any effort to end unpaid internships
@nora_jooe That's how most organizing campaigns start! We also thought all interns were unpaid, not just some.
It's worth asking why a proudly pro-union institution still relies on unpaid labor. Instead of engaging with us, they tried to shut it down before it began.
More like the government mooches off US!
Mind you, NY just had their primary elections last Tuesday. Who do you think filled in for all the staffers who were busy campaigning for their bosses' allies on paid time off?
NOT the people collecting a paycheck.
@401Casey Based on the legislative requests most of us write for our bosses to eventually take credit for, I’d say yeah we have a good grasp on most political issues
What most people seem to not get is that most interns currently advocating for pay won’t even be a part of the Council by the time our work is done.
This fight is NOT about what’s in our bank accounts. It’s about changing a broken system that only allows the wealthy to succeed.
Every single one of us knew what we signed up for.
This fight isn’t about us. It’s about expanding job opportunities to people from ALL economic backgrounds.
How do you expect working people to be represented in government if they can’t even afford to make it in the room?
Our movement isn't about one person. It's be about making public service more accessible.
Public service shouldn't be limited to those who can afford to work for free.
These interns just put on an inspiring rally to get paid for their labor.
In a city where the mayor talks about public sector excellence, and the council talks about tackling the affordability crisis, it makes no sense to ask council interns to work for free.
Our work is just getting started.

On the eve of New York’s primary elections, shoutout to the unpaid interns currently doing the work of paid staff while those staffers are out canvassing for their bosses’ preferred candidates.
Thanks for keeping the lights on. We see you.

Exactly. Our City’s youngest public servants deserve the same protections, respect, and opportunities as anyone else working to make New York City a better place for all.
Public service shouldn't be reserved ONLY for those who can afford to work for free.
See you Friday!
I was fired for organizing for wages as an unpaid intern at NYC Council last Wednesday.
@CouncilInterns are rallying this Friday for pay for all interns and an affordable New York for young public servants.
We’re cementing our right to organize.
