A Florida high school student, Vaibhav Bhaskar, has made state history after graduating from Steinbrenner High School with an extraordinary 11.99 weighted GPA, the highest ever recorded in Florida. His remarkable achievement was made possible under Hillsborough County’s former uncapped weighted GPA system, which rewarded students for taking advanced coursework. During his four years of high school, Bhaskar completed 20 Advanced Placement (AP) classes and 24 dual-enrollment college courses, earning an associate degree before even receiving his high school diploma. His dedication, discipline, and rigorous academic schedule helped him stand out as one of the state’s most accomplished students, and he will attend Duke University to study finance and economics.
Bhaskar’s record-setting GPA has also led to a significant change in local education policy. In response to the unusually high weighted GPA, Hillsborough County Public Schools approved a new grading system that caps weighted GPAs at 5.0 for future students. School officials said the update is designed to create a more balanced and standardized academic environment while reducing the intense pressure students may feel to overload their schedules with advanced classes. Bhaskar himself said he supports the change, explaining that colleges typically recalculate applicants’ GPAs using their own evaluation methods, making an uncapped GPA less important than maintaining strong academic performance and a healthy balance.
