New: The average ACA deductible has jumped by over $1,000 per person in 2026 as people switched to lower premium plans with higher deductibles as Congress allowed enhanced premium subsidies to expire.
"Roughly 5 million people could lose coverage from the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace this year after the enhanced premium tax credits expired in 2025, according to the latest analysis from KFF."

More ACA enrollees are not paying their premiums and dropping coverage, a direct result of Congress not extending enhanced premium subsidies. Out-of-pocket premiums are up 58%, and some people are also switching to plans with much higher deductibles as a result.
