this is one of the biggest studies on inguinal hernia in the last 20 years. A common problem that affects working age people globally. Here, we took a whole systems approach to show how these can be fixed quickly through simple surgery, with clear economic gains and the avoidance of complex emergency care.

@gecko_study is a prospective cohort study from @NIHR_GSU launched in August 2023

As the year comes to a close, the study has recruited almost 42k patients across 1150 🏥 from 107 🌏

🔥NHS waiting list for diagnostics and surgery: here to stay?🔥

@dnepo new expert modelling analysis, presented yesterday and abstract published in the @TheLancet

5 Highlights:

⚠️80% of the backlog is hidden and not recorded in official numbers - communities are in need.
⚠️85% of the backlog is for day-case procedures
⚠️Most of this is low-complexity, high volume
⚠️Half of the backlog is in people age 16-59 years: working age
📌Conclusion: For maximum community benefit, ICBs should focus on simple diagnostics and procedures, ring-fencing them from complex and emergency care.

There are hard conversations to be had around prioritising rare and complex care, versus simple and common.
