In #MED6288, we were asked to write an op-ed on a policy issue of interest. Community water fluoridation has been a contentious topic in #Calgary for many years - hopefully this year fluoride gets voted in.

As #COVID19 cases ⬆️ again in AB, the @PTAlberta needs to adapt to the current situation and change the current legislation NOW (not in the future) of a required PCE, to meet the needs of the public by licensing physio candidates to provide respiratory and rehab care

A curriculum change has been much needed for many years. It's good to see the inclusion of financial literacy, computer science, sexual consent, and world religions, but it still needs so much work to address major gaps.

#VariantsOfConcern are high here in Alberta, yet so many people not adhering to the restrictions. The need for more effective public health messaging, enforcement, and adherence is important with nice weather and covid fatigue & alert fatigue increasing.

To date, ≥ 8,266 #VariantsOfConcern cases (↑1,162 since Mar.25), including 7,725 (↑1,114) B.1.1.7, 272 (↑36) P.1 variants & 269 (↑12) B.1.351 have been reported, with numbers highest in Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario & Quebec. https://t.co/IHyBa1lpr8
2) The provincial Regulators (Colleges) to immediately suspend the requirement for a completion of the clinical component of the PCE to be eligible for licensure in every province 3/6
Today, the CAPR cancelled an already year-long delayed physiotherapy exam to license physios in 🇦. When talking about quality of care, it's ridiculous to think that by continuously delaying the exam, physios will be able to retain optimal clinical skills.

Nutrition is the FOUNDATION for our mental and physical health. Isn't that obvious to everyone? It has been known for thousands of years. Why don't our current governments and policy makers make it a top priority?
Amendments to Bill C-7 were accepted yesterday, but there is still a long way to go in achieving fair, equitable, timely, and better person-centered care in medical assistance in dying.

Recognizing health system failures revealed by #COVID19 encourages restructuring across the health, social and economic sectors.
Maybe a systems thinking approach could be effective? #MED6288
A clinic that acknowledges reasons why Indigenous seniors might not access health care services, and has created a culturally appropriate and safe environment for them to get vaccinated 👏👏👏

Many people who use drugs face daily challenges due to #stigma. This can make it even harder to ask for help. #Addiction is not a choice. Let’s #EndStigma by showing compassion and support. https://t.co/8LHQWWdTi4

I would highly recommend this book to everyone in Disease and Injury Prevention and #MED6288 Policy and Decision Making. It compliments both topics from this week, and provides a first hand perspective of addiction in the Canadian context
From The Ashes by Jesse Thistle provides a crucial perspective in the struggle with addiction and health/social services.
"I'd tried accessing treatment before, many times, but [...] there was always some kind of restriction." (p. 222)

The #COVID19 pandemic has affected almost everyone in the world, says @WHO's @DrTedros. "That means mass trauma, even bigger than what the 🌎 experienced after WW2... mass trauma affects communities for many years to come so countries have to see it as such & prepare for that."
