"When you first look at the opponent, you call it man-marking.
If you’re looking first at your team-mate, you call it zonal marking.
If you’re looking first at the ball, you call it pressing."

This article critiques football’s rondo obsession, arguing its rigid positional drills crush creativity, perception & adaptability by conditioning obedient conformists instead of perceptive, self-organizing players who excel in match chaos👇🏼

Superb analysis, really enjoyed it. One thing it made me reflect on, though: when we write tactical analysis, space, time and relationships can be treated as tools to create action possibilities (and to close the opponent’s)
Growing up, I learned so much tactically from the great minds at Spielverlagerung. Now, they just published an impressive piece on our attacking play at Mjällby. Perfect reading material for the festive period ☃️⚽️

Racing Santander currently has most wins, most goals and most points in La Liga 2.
They also rank lowest for crosses and long passes.
I love to watch them play.
This top-quality work from @Ruxiiii4 and @tmccabe98 is a brilliant analysis of a team that dares to be different.

Further developing my Coaching Philosophy/Methodology today - working on Offensive Principles and Structure -> Defensive Transition + Counter-Pressing. Some key factors as shown below 👇
- Verticality in possession
- Compact Offensive Structure (Verticial + Horizontal)
- Zonal + Numerical Overload in Rest Defence Structure - Aggressiveness in counter-pressing (Around/Away Principle)
When attacking I believe in creating conditions to then effectively deal with defensive transition for two main reasons:
1) Likelihood of losing the ball when attacking (risk and reward spectrum
2) Using the moments after ball loss to regain -> Offensive transition + the unbalance created within the game to create goalscoring opportunities!

In this weeks @iDiskiTimes article I had the great pleasure of speaking to my former colleague and friend @KrisBerg_89. Kris shares some insights about how he uses his career as a former player for his new career in coaching as well as a couple of his favourite practices
Over time, complex dynamic systems (teams) adapt & evolve. As this system becomes more organized, their inter-actions become more complex & new patterns emerge. The teams' game model and principles are the guiding thread that runs through it, creating order from disorder.

btw, for a bit of deep Cardoso-lore, here he is in 2014 demonstrating part of his methodology for coaching counter-pressing in defensive transition.

Really liked watching this team
Minimum Width
They would bring 8/9 players to the ball side with only the far side WB wider
Emphasis on central combinations & frequent diagonal passes
Really vertical with passes & with multiple movements pushing back the defensive line
Each game model has a specific energy requirement. So then the questions become: Are your weekly training sessions compatible with that game model & and energy needs. Are there specific individual & team adaptations occurring based on the sessions? Is there harmony & specificity?

Thanks for the great thread! Given the relevance of this article on man-marking by @ReneMaric , I’d like to point out that there are many different types of man-marking.
