“Ethereum was not created to make finance efficient or apps convenient. It was created to set people free”

This was an important - and controversial - line from the Trustless Manifesto ( https://t.co/QAvZfiNxpe ), and it is worth revisiting it and better understanding what it means.

“efficient” and “convenient” have the connotation of improving the average case, in situations where it’s already pretty good. Efficiency is about telling the world's best engineers to put their souls into reducing latency from 473 ms to 368ms, or increasing yields from 4.5% APY to 5.3% APY. Convenience is about people making one click instead of three, and reducing signup times from 1 min to 20 sec.

These things can be good to do. But we must do them under the understanding that we will never be as good at this game as the Silicon Valley corporate players. And so the primary underlying game that Ethereum plays must be a different game. What is the game? Resilience.

Resilience is the game where it’s not about 4.5% APY vs 5.3% APY - rather, it’s about minimizing the chance that you get -100% APY.

Resilience is the game where if you become politically unpopular and get deplatformed, or if a the developers of your application go bankrupt or disappear, or if Cloudflare goes down, or if an internet cyberwar breaks out, your 2000ms latency continues to be 2000ms.

Resilience is the game where anyone, anywhere in the world will be able to access the network and be a first-class participant.

Resilience is sovereignty. Not sovereignty in the sense of lobbying to become a UN member state and shaking hands at Davos in two weeks, but sovereignty in the sense that people talk about "digital sovereignty" or "food sovereignty" - aggressively reducing your vulnerabilities to external dependencies that can be taken away from you on a whim. This is the sense in which the world computer can be sovereign, and in doing so make its users also sovereign.

This baseline is what enables interdependence as equals, and not as vassals of corporate overlords thousands of kilometers away.

This is the game that Ethereum is suited to win, and it delivers a type of value that, in our increasingly unstable world, a lot of people are going to need.

The fundamental DNA of web2 consumer tech is not suited to resilience. The fundamental DNA of _finance_ often spends considerable effort on resilience, but it is a very partial form of resilience, good at solving for some types of risks but not others.

Blockspace is abundant. Decentralized, permissionless and resilient blockspace is not. Ethereum must first and foremost be decentralized, permissionless and resilient block space - and then make that abundant.

okay, hear me out:

we are positioned to make crypto MATTER for the world.

for anyone from the single mother trying to save for her kids tuition to the refugee who had to escape war, all the way to the high schooler that wants to start learning about finance.

HOW?

low risk defi on ethereum is essentially a universal savings account that can let anyone anywhere save the money they earn

let’s think about this way:

the crypto 1x (let anyone save money globally) is an amazing breakthrough considering that most people are currently making a ~0.8x due to inflation.

a traditional US savings account yields 0.4%

and that 0.4% is in the UNITED STATES, the most economically powerful country in the world, people in other countries have it far worse.

but now, for the first time EVER:

anyone, ANYWHERE can access stable yield.

most people don’t have access to US treasury yields,

but EVERYONE has access to low risk defi,

everyone has access to Ethereum.

and these stable yields on ethereum are consistently doing 4% at scale.

so what does this man?

it means compounding money, the holy grail of personal finance, is now available for everyone in the world.

this =

more people being able to send their kids to college, raising up their life opportunities, their standards and their ability to impact the world.

It’s beautiful, it’s real, and it’s happening.

at an event at Devconnect this year, I was on stage giving a talk with a colleague, and an audience member asked a question. It was a question about a topic I was extremely familiar with and well capable of answering.

As I began to answer it, the (male) audience member interrupted, shook his hand at me in a dismissive shooing gesture, turned his gaze to my (male) colleague on stage with me, and said, without looking at me, "this is a technical question" and waited for my male colleague to answer.

This is NOT my typical experience in crypto, but it is one that leaves an impression when it happens.

I'm certain that many people in the room don't clock something like this when it happens. I'm certain that it misinforms other audience members about my knowledge level.

Yet, when these things happen, my best path forward is to ignore it and move on because my goal is to not distract from the topic at hand - I've chosen to give a talk because I want the audience to digest it, not talk about some idiot's aggressive bigotry.

Anyway, nothing to correct here. Just sharing that some people are idiots.

- Las ves liderando comunidades que cruzan fronteras, idiomas y niveles de experiencia como si fueran una sola familia.  
- Las ves creando arte que convierte código en cultura y cultura en adopción.  
Las ves liderando protocolos desde América Latina.  
- Las ves como developers que cierran issues a las 3 a.m., shippean features y levantan proyectos desde la nada.  
- Las ves como fundadoras que arman equipos, levantan rondas y cargan el riesgo que otros ni se atreven a oler.
