My interest in fascism and dictators began when I was a teenager. I remember the moment clearly: during the summer of 1998, I picked up Stanley G. Payne’s Franco’s Spain. That book opened a world I hadn’t expected—one where power, ideology, and history collided in ways that reshaped entire nations.
From that starting point, I spent the next 28 years studying some of the world’s most dangerous dictators and writing about the damage their regimes inflicted. What began as a teenager’s curiosity grew into a long-term effort to understand how authoritarian systems work and why their influence still echoes in our world today.
