Here is a model example of how our regulations are screwing American consumers: The Datsun D21 aka Nissan Hardbody.

This was first manufactured in 1985 and experienced few changes until 1997 when sale ceased in the US due to... drumroll... emissions standards.

However, the same basic design was manufactured in Mexico until 2008 and in South Africa (albeit with more numerous tweaks) until 2021. Owners of legacy D21s could get new original manufacturer replacement parts for their US trucks until the Biden administration.

Obviously I don't expect every design to last 36 years, but the ubiquitous demand for light trucks is stymied, essentially only, by regulations that make light trucks impossible to manufacture. American consumers pay through the nose for more than they want to need because it's the only thing that's legal, and then they pay more for maintenance due to limited model lifecycles and the associated parts scarcity as regulations continue to tighten.

It's a bad system that benefits literally nobody.
