R.C. Sproul told the story that when his children were young he was investigating a public school so he and his wife went to an open forum with the principal of the school. There was a detailed presentation by the principal about the school and what it would teach children and how it would help children learn and grow. The principal explained that everything is specifically designed for a specific goal and purpose in the classroom.

At the end, there was a question and answer time and Sproul raised his hand and asked the principal a question. Sproul said: “I have appreciated your work and the planning that has gone into the school. You have done well explaining what the school can do and how it will teach students but I am interested in a more fundamental question about the purpose of education: What is the overarching purpose of education? What kind of children are you trying to produce?”

The principal was taken aback by this question, to say the least. After a moment of reflection, finally he responded in an honest and direct way. He said, “I don’t know. No one has ever asked me that question.” Sproul told the man that he respected the man’s honesty but he said frankly that kind of answer was terrifying.

This is the fundamental problem with Modern education: we do not know what the highest purpose is for school. Some will say to get a good job or to be a good citizen but those are not fundamental enough. In many ways, those answers reduce man to being merely a cog in the machine of the economy or of the nation. And while those aspects of life are important, they are not the most important. These ideas end up missing the deeper teleology needed for education.

The reason the deeper answer is ignored or unknown is because people do not know what man is. Is he merely a biological animal? Or is he a spiritual creature made in the image of God? To answer the question of what man is, is to start to explain man’s purpose and by extension to answer the question what education is for.

This is why Christian education is so important. It runs on the knowledge of man’s identity as a creature made in the image of God. This deep reality shapes education at every level because it teaches who man is and what man is for. Education that lacks a Christian foundation is stunted and stunting to students. This is why Christian education is the only education that truly frees students to be fully human.
