The Dow hit a record high today. The same session, Broadcom fell 14% and the AI trade cracked. Those are not two stories. They are one.
Look under the index. The Dow jumped about 700 points, up 1.4%, to a fresh all-time high. The Nasdaq fell. The S&P 500 sat dead flat. One average at a record while another bleeds, on the same day, is not a rally. It is a rotation.
Watch which way the money ran. Out of the chips: Broadcom down 14% on a record quarter, CrowdStrike down 10%. Into the lifeboats: UnitedHealth up almost 6%, Eli Lilly nearly 5%, JPMorgan, Walmart, and Costco all green. Health insurers, banks, and grocers led one of the most expensive markets in history. Read that twice.
The trigger was Broadcom. It grew AI revenue 143% and still got sold, because it would not promise even more. That single flinch sent the whole tape reaching for cover.
Here is what the record high hides. When an index prints a new high because capital is fleeing the leaders that built the bull and crowding into recession-proof defensives, that is not confidence. It is fear with the lights still on. The headline holds. The leadership rots underneath it.
This is how tops tend to look from the inside. The generals stumble. A defensive rotation paints the tape green. Breadth quietly narrows while the screen flashes a record.
The Dow did not tell you the market is strong today. It told you where the smart money is hiding.

@TaviCosta The sector is way too small for big insto money, if they would enter they would have to buy a quarter of Newmont in one go, and there is just a handful of players available with at least something of a market cap
This was the last chance and a truly golden opportunity for his 25th Slam, and he knew it as he didn't want to talk about it at all in the post match interview, he even interrupted the first question about this topic halfway.
