Herb Ritts (b. 13 August 1952) was an American fashion photographer and director who helped define the visual culture of the 1980s and 1990s. Based out of Los Angeles, Ritts bypassed traditional studio backdrops in favor of the California sunlight, desert, and ocean. His signature aesthetic combined a stark minimalism with clean lines and strong, sculptural forms which bridged the gap between fine art photography and high-fashion advertising campaigns.
Herb’s ascent began by chance in the late 1970s when he took a series of informal portraits of his friend, a then-unknown Richard Gere, at a San Bernardino gas station where they had stopped to fix a flat tire. The spontaneous shots of the sweaty, jean-clad Gere were published in Vogue, Esquire, and Mademoiselle, turning Gere into a sex symbol and Ritts into a much sought after photographer. He went on to capture defining images for the era's biggest superstars, shooting magazine covers for Vanity Fair (nearly 40), Vogue, GQ, and Rolling Stone alongside advertising campaigns for Calvin Klein, Chanel, and Gianni Versace.
Among his most recognizable photographs are -- Fred With Tires (1984), the True Blue album cover for Madonna (1986), Jump (1987), Mark Wahlberg (1992 - for Calvin Klein’s men’s underwear campaign), and the 1993 Vanity Fair cover featuring Cindy Crawford and k.d. lang.
In 1989, Ritts seamlessly moved into directing with a number of highly stylized music videos and over 50 television commercials. His videos for Madonna ("Cherish"), Janet Jackson ("Love Will Never Do (Without You)"), Chris Isaak ("Wicked Game"), and Britney Spears ("Don't Let Me Be the Last to Know") are celebrated for translating his signature high-contrast photographic look to the screen.
Raised in an affluent Brentwood family next door to actor Steve McQueen, Ritts was self-taught, having studied economics and art history at Bard College. At Bard, he realized he was gay and came out to his parents, both designers, who were accepting and supportive of his sexuality. From 1996 until his death in 2002, Herb was in a relationship with entertainment lawyer Erik Hyman. A deeply committed advocate for HIV/AIDS funding, Herb Ritts passed away at age 50 from AIDS-related complications. 🏳️🌈
