Hackers called me yesterday while I was at work. I knew immediately it was a scam, but I went with it to see if I could figure out what it was and it is nice to waste their time on the phone, as well.

Mother of God….. This shit was unbelievable. The level of sophistication is gonna fool so many people. I don’t know what the answer is to fix this but for sure its needs attention.
First of all, phone number says #Coinbase on caller ID. Guy claims to be from support. This is an American guy and says all the right things with perfect English. This bastard opens with his name (David Mulligan or some shit) and employee ID number. Gives me the whole ‘this phone call may be recorded spiel and also the Coinbase will never ask for your username or password or ask you to provide any personal or confidential information, and then reads a quick but incredibly well written legal disclaimer about who knows what but it sounded great.
He says there is a request to change my email and that they wanted to confirm it was me. Of course I pretend to be shocked.
Well, first thing is he verifies me. Holy fuck. He knows all of it. Name, address (but he had the rental apartment I lived in 7 years ago when I first got into crypto - error #1), DOB, phone number, and email (Error #2. I switched from my personal email to a Protonmail email address for all crypto related stuff probably 2 years ago) But still, I’m pretty much shitting in my pants at this moment.)
Now that I’m “verified”
HERE IS THE SCAM PART…….
This son of bitch in his great English tells me they are going to lock down my account and halt all withdrawals as it appears I have been compromised. I’m gonna need to upgrade my security to the highest tier. Ah ha! This must be where he asks me to send me a link or something, but no, HE TELLS ME TO LOG INTO COINBASE MYSELF!!! What?! He says yes, we would never ask you for your user Id or password. You will upgrade your security settings yourself to the highest tier level.
I’m on my laptop pretending to be a noob, he has me log in, navigate to settings, then click API.
He wants me to ADD NEW API
My 2FA pops up, I enter the code and am on the API screen. He says to “click all” on the accounts section and ‘click ALL” on PERMISSIONS!!!!!!
DING DING DING DING DING DING.
Under permissions - you would granting access to READ/WRITE/TRANSFER etc.
An API key is a way for 2 computers to communicate. The permissions you are granting gives the other computer the set of rules they can follow. They are asking you to SELECT ALL options on permissions because it will give them ability to withdraw your money.
Once the key is active they withdraw everything.
Become familiar with API keys because you will be using them next year when you do your taxes. You will create API keys for all the exchanges BUT you will create the keys with READ ONLY permissions. This means they are only able to ‘read’ and query your transaction history so they can calculate your taxes. NEVER NEVER NEVER GIVE ANYTHING OTHER THAN READ ONLY PERMISSIONS.
