The White House released an executive order on digital assets today - it would be difficult to imagine an order more pro-crypto than this one.

In addition to promoting “leadership in digital assets and financial technology while protecting economic liberty” it explicitly prohibits “the establishment, issuance, circulation, and use of a CBDC [central bank digital currency].”

This is a clear “Bitcoin not blockchain” position that stands in stark contrast to the misdirected “blockchain not Bitcoin” stance that many governments and individuals who do not understand this asset class and technology often adopt.

The order protects and promotes the ability of individual citizens and private-sector entities alike “to transact with other persons without unlawful censorship, and to maintain self-custody of digital assets.”

It protects the right to access banking services for the crypto industry.

Most importantly, it sets up a Working Group that “shall evaluate the potential creation and maintenance of a national digital asset stockpile and propose criteria for establishing such a stockpile” - the now notorious "Strategic Bitcoin Reserve".

This brings me to South Africa:

South Africa has been a global pioneer in the crypto asset space to date - it has put in place a regulatory framework for the crypto asset industry and has licensed crypto asset service providers in the country. The next step for South Africa is to seriously consider and put in place a strategic Bitcoin reserve of its own.

Time is of the essence here. Make no mistake that the sovereign race to do this has already begun. Those that act quickly will benefit while those that tarry will literally pay the price.
