For proof generation, MidenVM uses the RPO hash function. Though traditional hash functions like BLAKE3 are very fast, they are not optimal for use inside zero-knowledge proof systems. For efficient recursive proof generation, you need a ZK-friendly hash function.

But why use RPO instead of any other existing ZK-friendly hash function?

Unlike other arithmetization-friendly hash functions, RPO is a concrete hash function designed for a specific context: native hashing within MidenVM.

RPO was co-developed by the researchers building Polygon Miden, with two parameters in mind: to optimize for Merkle tree hashing and to operate over the same prime field as the VM.

The prime field used in MidenVM is the Goldilocks Field, a finite field modulus first proposed by Polygon’s Hamish Ivey-Law. The Goldilocks Field offers performance gains by optimizing for hardware, allowing for very efficient arithmetic in commercially-available, 64-bit CPUs.
