As a Chief, this conversation is personal to me.
There is no serious doubt that China is interfering in Canada through elections, investments, organized crime, and political influence.
But I had also seen reports of China targeting First Nations communities.
What I did not fully understand was the depth of that strategy, the impact it could have, or the relationships being built until this conversation with @scoopercooper.
It’s personal because many First Nations are seeking investment to grow their economies, create jobs, and lift their communities out of poverty. That matters.
But so does protecting our democracy. No foreign government should be shaping our politics, exploiting vulnerable communities or interfering in our domestic affairs.
Sam Cooper and I discuss China’s approach to First Nations, foreign interference, CSIS’s warnings, which political party would actually stand up to Beijing, and what Canada needs to do next.

@Bratt_world No one has ended the deal, it still is in place for 10 more years. Besudes, would you want to continue a trade deal with a country that insults and antagonizes you?
And where are your concerns about the tariffs 🇨🇳 just applied to 🇨🇦, or has your disdain for Trump blinded you?
@Dave_Eby Extreme? You have literally turned your province into a drug addled shithole with rampant corruption.
The only extreme political parties in Canada are the NDP and Liberal party.
Canadians have a sense of superiority over Americans in a number of areas — Canadians believe they are more humble, cultured and generally nicer, according to a new poll.
That's part of the problem. Our problem.
@RoKhanna Why do you hate successful people? Penalizing success is a losing proposition. It destroys the motivation to innovate, work hard and drive beneficial change. If you don't like what rich people do with their money, change the laws.
Socialism fails every time. Taxation is theft.
@Zoey_B_@Bratt_world All countries negotiate in their own best interests, so nothing new there. Also, the price we sell oil to the US at was mutually agreed to. We should have done better at the negotiations. Stop trying to blame our decade of economic decline on Trump. Canadians own all of that.
@Bratt_world CUSMA still exists.
You missed the point, though... why would anyone jeopardize access to the largest market, with whom we share 85% of our trade, by antagonizing them? We cannot replace a market of that size and proximity with EU or China. It makes no fucking sense.
@FlavioVolpe1@Bratt_world So you feel sorry for all the Palestinians shouting "Death to Canada".
You're fucked bro.
Also, pointing out problems in this country is actually holding politicians accountable, something I suppose you also feel sorry about doing.
🤡
@Bratt_world Perhaps you mean "geography" is a huge factor to stable trade. We have the world's largest market at our back door and is the biggest reason why Canada should be pursuing mutually beneficial agreements with the US instead of insulting and antagonizing them. Liberals suck.
