The Brazilian Amazon has lost an area larger than Spain over the past 40 years, according to a major new study.

Since 1985, more than 52 million hectares (520,000 square kilometers) of the Brazilian rainforest have been cleared, an area exceeding the entire territory of Spain. This represents roughly 13 percent of Brazil’s original Amazon vegetation.

The environmental monitoring platform MapBiomas reports that nearly 40 percent of all land conversion for agriculture, mining, and infrastructure in the Brazilian Amazon occurred in just the last four decades, a sharp acceleration compared to the previous five centuries.

Scientists warn that the Amazon is approaching a dangerous tipping point. The rapid deforestation threatens biodiversity, indigenous communities, and global climate stability. As one of the world’s largest carbon sinks and a key regulator of weather patterns, the continued loss of the Amazon has serious implications for the entire planet.

Earth’s atmosphere has crossed a historic threshold unseen for more than 3 million years.

Atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) levels have now surpassed 430 parts per million (ppm): a concentration last experienced during the Pliocene epoch, long before modern humans existed.

This milestone was recorded at the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii, the world’s longest continuously operating CO₂ monitoring station. In early March, daily averages peaked at 430.60 ppm: a figure climate scientists have tracked with growing concern for decades.

But what does crossing this threshold actually mean?

Prior to the Industrial Revolution, atmospheric CO₂ levels remained stable around 280 ppm. Today, they stand more than 50% higher, largely due to the burning of fossil fuels, large-scale deforestation, and other industrial activities.

This is far more than just a number: it’s a clear warning signal for the planet.

Approximately 25% of the CO₂ we emit is absorbed by the oceans. As it dissolves, it forms carbonic acid, driving ocean acidification. This process is already weakening shell-forming marine organisms such as corals, plankton, and mollusks — the foundational species of ocean food webs.

Researchers note that the current rate of ocean acidification is likely the fastest seen in at least 300 million years.

Many climate models had projected that CO₂ concentrations would only approach this level under aggressive global mitigation efforts. Instead, we’ve reached it while emissions continue to rise.

If current trends persist, atmospheric CO₂ could exceed 500 ppm by the end of the century, ushering in climate conditions not seen on Earth for tens of millions of years.

In the Czech Republic, tourists found a real treasure weighing 7 kg of gold

During a walk on the slopes of Mount Zvičina, they came across a stash of hundreds of gold coins and jewelry.

The treasure was hidden in two containers: one with 598 gold coins from the 19th–20th centuries, the other with dozens of jewelry items. It was likely buried after 1921.

They handed the find over to a museum.

Experts confirmed its authenticity, and the authorities paid the finders about €470,000.

Sometimes honesty really pays off.

Sai Scott posted photos showing himself approaching an active agricultural field fire, along with the caption:

“Is this the country that has laws to protect natural resources for all of us? Agricultural burning is illegal because if it’s allowed to spread, it can reach community areas and forests.”

He later added further clarification:
“I need to add to the caption in case some people don’t understand. This is a sugarcane field — burning sugarcane/agricultural burning is illegal because fires are difficult to control and are one of the causes of wildfires. They can spread to conservation areas and reserved forests (degraded forests can later be claimed with land documents), and
residential communities.”

Sai didn't specify the province where the photos were taken.

Two local farmers working in a field in the Bamiyan Valley of Afghanistan, 1992....

The two monumental statues, known as the Buddhas of Bamiyan, were carved into the sandstone cliffs around the 6th Century CE. They were once the tallest standing Buddha statues in the world, measuring 115 feet and 174 feet in height. The statues were a significant example of the Gandharan school of Buddhist art, blending Indian, Persian, and Greco-Roman artistic styles.

In March 2001, Taliban tragically destroyed both statues using artillery and explosives, despite global outrage.
