I’m disturbed to learn that there was yet another potential act of violence in a house of worship—at the Muslim Center in Queens. I’m relieved he was subdued by a congregant before any harm occurred. Islamophobia is unacceptable, and we must continue to reject hatred and bigotry in every form.

BREAKING 🚨 A Muslim worshipper stopped an armed man during Jummah khutbah at the Muslim Center of New York in Flushing, NY.

According to a community summary, the man entered the premises and began taking a gun out of his pocket before a Muslim brother tackled him and managed to get the gun away.

The masjid went into a brief lockdown. NYPD arrived within minutes and arrested the suspect.

No injuries reported. No shots fired. Alhamdulillah.

Today, during Friday prayers at the Muslim Center in Flushing, a masked individual pulled what appeared to be a deadly weapon. My team and I have been in contact with NYPD and the suspect is in custody. I’m grateful for the law enforcement on duty and the brave bystanders who took action and disarmed this individual.

I’m relieved that no one was hurt, but acts of violence and intimidation have no place in any house of worship. We must stand up against Islamophobia each time we are confronted with it.
