Should @BorisJohnson be held to account for the damage and destruction caused to Ukraine?
I highly recommend this Substack article by my friend @marydejevsky who was the Times Bureau Chief in Moscow during the 90s.
She argues that, when the devastating Ukraine war ends, Boris Johnson should be held to account for urging its prolongation in April 2022, by encouraging Zelensky not to accept the draft Istanbul peace deal, that had been initialled by Ukrainian negotiators.
In her article, Mary ponders. “Nor is it known precisely what arguments Johnson advanced to persuade Volodymyr Zelensky to reject the terms.”
To me this seems abundantly clear, though perhaps because I was still sat inside of the Foreign Office at the time.
In her Mansion House speech on 27 April, then Foreign Secretary @trussliz said. “We are doubling down. We will keep going further and faster to push Russia out of the whole of Ukraine.”
The following day, 28 April, interviewed on Sky News and asked what was meant by the “whole of Ukraine”, then Defence Secretary @BenWallace70 said “that, of course, includes Crimea”.
So it’s clear that the offer of supporting Ukraine “for as long as it takes” meant, for as long as it takes to evict Russia from all the territory occupied, not just since the start of the war on 24 February 2022, but since the onset of the Ukraine crisis in February 2014.
Ends and means. The end was clear.
But at the time, it seemed self-evident to me that the UK and its western allies did not have the means to deliver.
How were we going to support Ukraine to achieve that which had not been possible since 2014, in circumstances where Russia had sent in those early days of the war, an estimated 150,000 troops into Ukraine?
History will show that the hundreds of billions of dollars of financial assistance and military materiel pumped into Ukraine since that time served only to slow the pace of Russia’s advance.
So Mary is right to accuse Boris Johnson of the most catastrophic blunder driven by ego and a desire to rebrand himself as a modern-day-Churchill in the midst of a political scandal - partygate - at home that ultimately led to his downfall.
That blunder has cost millions of lives to death, injury or displacement, bankrupted Ukraine, sown division and unrest across Europe and cost Britain billions of pounds that we should have spent on more important things.
And yet he will face no legal liability for this. But rather, as Tony Blair has continued to do since the illegal UK involvement in the Iraq War of 2003, he will continue to brand himself as Ukraine’s knight of a white horse.
@BenWallace70@BorisJohnson@marydejevsky You may find it embarrasing, but that doesn't make it propaganda. It cheapens you to say this.
"I could not see for the life of me what the deal could be, and I thought that any deal with Putin was going to be pretty sordid.” Boris Johnson
There’s an Andy Burnham story I feel some people are desperate to keep out of the headlines. It centres on the Mayor's relationship with the luxury property developer Renaker.
- Public loans since 2016:
£800,000,000.
- On-site affordable homes in the flagship GMCA backed towers:
ZERO
- And that headline £114m “affordable elsewhere” promise?
Deferred on viability. Meaning it can be pushed back or whittled down to nothing.
Have a read of this if you can access it. There is so much more going on here. Including, how, as Manchester Mayor in May 2024 he launched a plan to build 10,000 council houses in his area. So far he’s managed to start work on 10. Yes 10.

My understanding was that more was meant to be released overnight. I can only assume the lawyers have got involved.

As Piers says, we were smeared on the front page of the Times in 2018 for asking tough questions about Douma.
This was done at the behest of MI6.
In the event the questions we asked got a reply in the leaks from inside the OPCW, the first of which I discovered in my pigeon home at work in a plain brown envelope in classic style.
As a result of that process, in which @aaronjmate has done sterling service, we know know that Douma was unequivocally a false flag in which civilians were massacred by the Syrian ‘opposition’ in order to be prettily arranged for the world’s cameras.
The ‘opposition’ who now rule Syria, did this with the direct connivance, perhaps direction, of MI6.
In the fullness of time the MI6 officer in charge of this op shall be arraigned at The Hague for their crimes.
We didn’t ask questions about Douma because we were ‘Assadists’ or ‘Putinists’ whatever that is.
We asked because we were social scientists and had/have a commitment to truth.
Sorry (not sorry) about that.
What a sad & fragile individual. Publicly humiliating & bullying an activist half his age because he dared to challenge him. Is that how you 'win every argument'?
Today we learned that the Prime Minister of Israel repeatedly raped, choked and beat Virginia Guiffre and the media today won't even say his name or the country he was the Prime Minister of.
It's impossible to hate the media enough.
