What a difference a year makes:

2021-22:
- Toffoli (age 29) | 74 gm, 20-29-49
- Sharangovich (age 23) | 76 gm, 24-22-46

Similar, right? Three fewer points for Yegor Sharangovich in his sophomore season, but the Belarusian had four more goals.

2022-23:
- Toffoli (age 30) | 82 gm, 34-39-73
- Sharangovich (age 24) | 75 gm, 13-17-30

Not close at all.

But was last year just a blip for one of them? Both of them? That's the ultimate question.

What we know is Tyler Toffoli's huge season last year had his contract extension price at a premium, plus it would kick in at age 32. That is dangerous terrain, especially if the players starts asking for big term. Paying a player at age 32, 33, 34, 35, etc. for the career year he had at age 30 is a fool's game in today's NHL. That was just way too risky for Calgary.

Meanwhile, Sharangovich's drop off last year should reduce what his re-signing number will be as a pending RFA in need of a new deal this summer. Going into his age 25 season, there could be value to be had there if with more ice time, he can get back to making the same offensive impact he made two years ago, and considering his age, there's the potential for more.

At first glance, my initial thought was huh, I thought Craig Conroy could have gotten more for the club's leading scorer last year. But then again, the market is a tricky thing to read from the outside and obviously nobody knows what the demand was and what was being offered than the guy seated in the general manager's chair talking on the phone. A year away from free agency, Toffoli asking for a trade didn't exactly put Conroy in a power position either.

If Sharangovich can bounce back and be a 25-goal man or maybe even 30, given a higher spot in the line-up and greater opportunity — and depending on what that next contract comes in at — it could turn out to be a sneaky good addition.

The third round pick Calgary added in this draft doesn't guarantee the Flames anything, but it does get them another dart to throw at 80th overall in a deep draft. The more darts, the better.

Obviously there's a ton of unknown with this deal. There's a potential upside for the Flames, but it's only potential at this point. Time will tell if it will be realized. But one expiring asset went out the door in exchange for two assets coming in. Considering that paying too much for too long in the form of a Toffoli extension was also avoided, the odds of this deal backfiring is minimal.

Will Conroy's first NHL trade and up being a home run? That also seems overly optimistic, but there's some modest upside. We won't truly be able to evaluate this deal for a few more years.

With the seal broken, all eyes are on Conroy's next move as there's still plenty of work to get done.
