COACHES SPOTLIGHT: Nearly a year ago, the Oregon State Beavers took down Notre Dame to reach the Elite Eight for just the second time in program history—both under the leadership of head coach Scott Rueck. Their run ended with a hard-fought, 12-point loss to eventual national champion South Carolina, and with the majority of their core having an additional year of eligibility, the Beavers looked like a legitimate Final Four contender next season.

Then came the offseason.

One by one, the team’s top six leading scorers entered the transfer portal, taking with them 80% of Oregon State’s offensive production. Conference realignment played a major role in the exodus, exposing the harsh reality of what the transfer portal can do to a program. With so much roster turnover, the Beavers were expected to fall out of the NCAA Tournament picture entirely.

But Rueck and his staff refused to let the program crumble.

Behind the emergence of Kelsey Rees, AJ Marotte, and Kennedie Shuler, along with key additions like Catarina Ferreira and Tiara Bolden, Oregon State punched its ticket back to the NCAA Tournament.

Ferreira, a Baylor transfer, thrived in a starting role, averaging (10.0) points and (7.3) rebounds, but she saved her best for when it mattered most, stepping up during the West Coast Conference Tournament. Rees, the team’s leading scorer (12.8pts) and rebounder (7.6rbs), made a massive leap, increasing her scoring average by nearly eight points from the previous season.

The Beavers started the season (1-5) and sat at (4-8) through 12 games. Their tournament chances? Slim. But instead of folding, they fought back, winning 10 of the final 12 games and turning a season of adversity into one that defines perseverance and resilience.

Now, against all odds, Oregon State is headed back to the NCAA Tournament—a testament not only to the players who stepped up but to the steady hand of Scott Rueck, who once again proved why he’s one of the best coaches in the game.
