There is no doubt that Cybercab will drive down the cost of transportation, but as Joe points out there doesn't just have to be one pricing model (base fare + $ per mile).

A single Cybercab could be sold six (or more) different ways: on-demand rides, multi-stop sessions, hourly rentals, daily rentals, monthly subscriptions, private ownership with network participation, or full ownership.

Each tier creates a different incentive. If Tesla has excess fleet capacity at 2 PM, hourly rentals can get cheaper. If Friday night demand is surging, on-demand prices can rise. If someone routinely uses 15–20 hours per month, a subscription can pull them into predictable recurring revenue. If rural or suburban areas need more vehicles, Tesla can make network participation more lucrative - encouraging private owners to supply the fleet instead of Tesla having to fund it.

And if Tesla needs more vehicles available during a specific time window, it can simply increase the owner's payout for those hours. That means pricing becomes a fleet-management tool.

Tesla could dynamically influence when people travel, which product they choose, when owners release their cars to the network, where vehicles migrate and how much capacity exists at any moment.

Airlines use pricing to fill seats. Utilities use pricing to shift electricity demand. Uber uses surge pricing to attract drivers. Tesla could potentially do all three - with autonomous vehicles.

Cybercab gives Tesla the ability to create an enormous marketplace where price (and various pricing models) continuously balances transportation supply and demand.

This is really cool. The vehicle lights up green to indicate it’s your car. You can open the trunk to put your items inside

Once in the car there is no steering wheel, no peddle. You just relax, watch a show, play a game or just do anything you want to do while you are driven to your destination

Right now the Tesla Cybercab is about half the price as Uber and Lyft

Elon Musk says the goal is to make them much cheaper

Elon Musk says Cybercab operating cost at scale should be around 20 cents per mile, with a rider price including taxes of 30–40 cents per mile

For reference it’s about $1.70 per mile with Uber and Lyft plus a base fair, booking fee and random surge pricing

The NHTSA ruling will ultimately be positive for #TSLA and Cybercab ownership. It is a necessary milestone that we go through this process and it will ultimately be found to lay the groundwork for future fleet expansion.

I think $TSLA is up tomorrow on the NHTSA detail that Tesla is ready to roll out 1k Cybercabs in Austin. Last Thursday I estimated they would reach 300 over three months.

That’s bullish for the stock because it shows Tesla’s confidence in safety is higher than most thought. And it’s particularly positive given Elon’s history of paranoia on the topic.

ps: The fact that NHTSA is fighting Tesla is a speed bump for Cybercab. They’ll eventually give in, then it’s off to races.
