“I work for USAID. I lost my job today.

I am really struggling to express the level of devastation I feel. About how much I believe in our work, both for the people we serve overseas and for how it makes America safer and stronger.

But tonight, I just want to tell you about what this means in practical terms. What it means for the people who uprooted their lives and families, who volunteered to serve in extremely difficult places, simply because they wanted to serve the American people.

My dear friend and neighbor is the person who makes sure anthrax and rabies, among many other serious threats, don't spread across borders. Her kids are like family to me. Tonight, they are scrambling to rewrite their entire life plans, with just weeks to leave the country. They don't have a house to move into. They don't have an onward job assignment. Her entire career path just disappeared. "Do I rent a house for a month? A year? Which state do we move to? How do we pay for any of this now that I don't have a job?" I wish I had some way to comfort her.

Another neighbor just got to post a few months ago. They were so excited! This was their first overseas assignment; they had worked for YEARS to get here. Last month, they went home for Christmas...to Los Angeles. They watched their home and their neighbors' homes and their families' homes burn to the ground. They have nowhere to go home TO. No job to give them income. Their sweet kids, who were already coping like rockstars through the international move and the fires, are now having nightly panic attacks.

I have so many more stories I could tell you. So many.

We are real people with families. When we lose our jobs overseas, we lose EVERYTHING. Housing, school, access to medical services, our entire communities. Even when everything goes smoothly, these international moves are ROUGH.

We do this because we care about the work. We serve the American people. We serve you.

We're still under a gag order. This post likely puts a target on my back, if it wasn't there already.

But what's happening is illegal, and it's just wrong. It makes you less safe. And above all, my duty is to the American people.

Even if you think USAID is worthless, I hope you agree that the way they are handling this "restructuring" isn't right (or legal). USAID employees are public servants and deserve -- at a minimum -- to be treated fairly and with respect as they watch their entire careers and lives evaporate.

What's happening at USAID could happen -- is already happening -- at the Department of Education, the FBI, OMB.

Please, speak to your representatives. Call them. Show up at their offices. In particular, we desperately need our red-state allies to stand up with us.

Any changes to USAID require an Act of Congress. It is quite literally the law.

According to medical experts, being grazed in the ear by an AR-15 round (typically a 5.56mm bullet) from 150 yards away can have several short-term and long-term effects, depending on the severity of the wound. Here’s a breakdown of potential long-term effects:
1. Hearing Loss or Damage
Even if the bullet does not directly penetrate the ear canal, the shockwave from a high-velocity round can cause permanent hearing loss in the affected ear.
Tinnitus (ringing in the ear) is also a common long-term effect.
If the eardrum is ruptured, partial or total deafness could occur.
2. Chronic Pain or Nerve Damage
The outer ear (pinna) has a rich nerve supply, so a grazing wound could cause chronic pain or numbness in and around the ear.
Damage to the facial nerve (if impacted) could lead to weakness or paralysis in parts of the face.
3. Scarring and Disfigurement
A grazing wound could leave a visible scar, especially if the wound was deep.
If part of the ear was torn or removed, cosmetic reconstruction might be needed.

Some individuals develop hyper-awareness or emotional distress related to loud noises (gunfire, fireworks, etc.).
5. Bone or Skull Fractures (If Impact Was Severe)
If the bullet hit the mastoid bone (behind the ear) or skull with enough force, there could be small fractures, leading to headaches, dizziness, or infection risks.
6. Infection or Complications
If the wound was not properly treated, infection or cartilage damage (perichondritis) could lead to long-term complications.

You know what I find fascinating? When he was the CEO of HCA, Rick Scott oversaw the largest case Medicare fraud in our nation’s history. Like *actual* fraud. Fraud that was so bad that we still had to take annual training on how to NOT commit the same fraud when I was an employee of HCA from 2006-2019.
