What if everyone actually sees a different color but we all call it the same name?
Just think about it.
For example: I grew up knowing this color is "red" because that's what I was taught.
But someone else might literally see something completely different when they look at the same thing yet they were also taught to call it "red", so they say it’s "red" when you ask them.
So we could all be experiencing totally different qualia, but we'd never know because we can't see through each other's eyes.
Your salary can get you closer to financial freedom or it can put you in deeper, suffocating consumer-debt.
Every salary can mean:
▪Less debt
▪More savings
▪More investments
▪Less hungry family
Or:
▪More spending
▪More financial mistakes
You stay in a bad job, toxic relationship, or even finish a terrible movie just because you’ve already invested so much time energy.
That’s the Sunk Cost Fallacy. Your brain hates admitting a loss more than it hates continuing something painful.

NSE vs Offshore stocks?
For the last two years, the NSE has quietly outperformed global markets. The numbers tell the story:
2024
NASI: +34% (and over 60% in dollar terms as the KES strengthened)
S&P 500: +24%
2025
NASI: +52%
S&P 500: +17%
2026 YTD
NASI: +10.24%
S&P 500: +11%
But the case goes beyond price returns.
On dividends, the NSE is in a different league. Names like BAT and Stanchart routinely offer yields of 10–15%. Compare that to global dividend kings, where 5–7% is about the ceiling.
Tax treatment favours the local investor too: a 5% withholding tax for Kenyans, versus 15–30% for foreigners holding global equities.
None of this is to say go all-in on Nairobi. But the next time someone tells you to look offshore for “real” returns, remember the home market has been doing the heavy lifting.
They all have a role to play in your portfolio.

Researchers swap your stated preference (e.g., which jam you liked best) and most people don’t notice and even defend the swapped choice as their own.
You don’t always know why you chose something; your brain confabulates reasons after the fact.
