Growing up in Latvia, late spring and early summer always meant rhubarb season in our home. My gran or mum would come back from the farmers’ market with a big bunch, and soon the kitchen would be filled with pies, jellies, and compotes. Those flavors became part of our daily life right up until the magical midsummer night of Jāņi on June 24th.
It’s great to see this humble vegetable and the joy of true seasonality being celebrated and shared. If you ever come across fresh rhubarb, do yourself a favour: clean the stem, dip it in sugar, and take that first tart-sweet bite. Pure Baltic summer in its simplest and most delicious form.
