During his first official visit to Ukraine, UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and members of the Ukrainian Government to review UNESCO’s activities across education, culture, science, communication and information and discuss priorities for further cooperation.

Working closely with national authorities and international partners, @UNESCO is responding to urgent needs in #Ukraine, while contributing to longer-term recovery and reconstruction. Its activities range across the mandate of the Organization, from advancing digital learning and providing psychosocial assistance to enhancing the safety of journalists, preserving its rich heritage, strengthening the governance of heritage institutions, investing in the skills and the continuity of work of cultural professionals, as well as researchers and scientists.

For five years now, Afghanistan is the only country in the world to formally prohibit access to education for girls and women beyond the primary level.

As of 2026, an estimated 2.4 million girls remain excluded from secondary education.

In the context of the escalation of the war in Ukraine following the invasion by the Russian Federation, @UNESCO condemns the reported strike on 15 June that hit the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, within the World Heritage property “Kyiv: Saint-Sophia Cathedral and Related Monastic Buildings, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra”, one of Ukraine’s most significant spiritual and cultural landmarks.

The strike reportedly caused significant damage to the exterior and interior of the Dormition Cathedral. Adjacent historic structures, including elements of the Lavra’s fortification complex and Ivan Kushnik Tower, were also reportedly impacted.

#UNESCO condemns attacks against cultural property, educational institutions, students, education personnel and media professionals protected under international law. Damage to such institutions deprives communities of access to culture, education, and shared spaces that are essential for recovery and social cohesion.

UNESCO stands ready to support relevant authorities in assessing damage to cultural and educational institutions and identifying urgent measures within its mandate.

Heavy attacks on Ukraine last night, with more civilians killed and the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, a UNESCO site, seriously damaged.

Today, G7 leaders meet in Evian.

We will discuss the next steps to increase pressure on Russia, bring Putin to the negotiating table, and end this senseless killing.

Europe wants peace. Nobody more than the Ukrainian people. Russia, on the other hand, showed again its sole interest in violence and destruction.

In the context of the recent escalation of the war in Ukraine following the invasion by the Russian Federation, @UNESCO is deeply alarmed by the reported aerial strikes over the weekend, notably in the Kyiv region, which resulted in reported severe damage to more than 10 cultural institutions and 2 educational and research facilities, as well as media outlets. #UNESCO expresses its sincere condolences to the families of the victims and its support to all those affected.

Among the monuments reported to be affected, three are located within the buffer zone of the UNESCO World Heritage site and the immediate vicinity of the cultural property under Enhanced Protection, “Kyiv: Saint-Sophia Cathedral and Related Monastic Buildings, Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra » : the National Academy of Music of Ukraine, the Central Post Office (Postal Station) and the Building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

UNESCO is deeply alarmed by the 24 March strikes that hit a building in the area of Bernardine Monastery within the World Heritage property of ‘L’viv – the Ensemble of the Historic Centre’.

@UNESCO recalls that cultural property is protected under the 1954 Hague Convention and the 1972 #WorldHeritage Convention. All parties must safeguard heritage and refrain from any acts harming cultural property.
