in the uk for the next week and a half visiting family, tinkering, and learning more about the startup ecosystem here
DeepMind, ElevenLabs, Granola, Revolut, Wise and @olix, which just raised at a $3.3bn valuation, started in London
Arm and raspberry pi came out of Cambridge
a few thoughts:
- London is a global financial hub with major customers to sell and an innovation friendly regulatory environment that has historically been early to support novel insurtech / fintech products
- London is an aggregation point for European talent, and recently reclaimed the #1 spot for tech in Europe from Paris. many of the best companies in London were started by founders from other parts of Europe
- in general, uk founders i’ve met seem much more disciplined on both valuation and burn, and seem to see the hidden in plain sight opportunity of a more global customer base vs focusing solely on the us
would love to meet more VCs / founders while i’m here!
Our next Investor Chat at Hippo Campus this Friday: Julie Lein! 🦛
Julie is AWESOME and one of my favorite people in Venture. She is co-founder and Managing Partner of Urban Innovation Fund, investing in the future of cities + urban environments.
Before VC, Julie was a political pollster — professionally trained to spot patterns everyone else was missing. She pointed that radar at venture capital and noticed other VCs were running scared from startups in regulated industries, even while Uber and Airbnb were proving those “too risky” markets could go big.
So she ran with that insight which became Tumml in 2012, a scrappy nonprofit accelerator that backed 33 startups. It went so well that Julie and co-founder Clara Brenner said “let’s stop asking for donations and start writing real checks” — and Urban Innovation Fund was born with a first fund of $24.5M. They have not looked back!
Come cowork with us this Friday and join Julie’s AMA — we’ll dig into building a fund from a hunch, betting on “boring” industries, and what it actually takes to fix a city.
Grab a day pass and come hang out:
