🇳🇬 With that line, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, framed the reform doctrine he came to defend on the main stage of the Africa CEO Forum Annual Summit in Kigali.

⚖️ Three years into the most consequential economic reset Africa's largest economy has attempted in a generation, the elimination of the fuel subsidy regime and the unification of the naira, President Tinubu offered no hedging. The temptation to ease the pressure as the 2027 elections come into view was put to him directly. His answer left no ambiguity. The reforms were not a political choice, they were a fiscal necessity. A subsidy system that fuelled smuggling, falsification and waste could not coexist with a country trying to compete in a global economy.

📊 The diagnostic he laid out was stark. When his administration took office in May 2023, twenty-seven of Nigeria's thirty-six states were unable to pay their workers' salaries. A country without a single functioning refinery was subsidising imported petroleum on borrowed money. The fiscal architecture was, in his own words, on the verge of bankruptcy. Resetting, recalibrating and reforming was the only path consistent with the long-term interests of the country.

🌍 The deeper message lands squarely in the pan-African capitalism conversation Kigali has been amplifying all week. Sovereignty is not a slogan, it is built through difficult fiscal decisions taken when the political cycle is least forgiving. Tinubu's framing was characteristically vivid. The reform process, he said, is like a woman carrying a pregnancy through the pain of labour, there is no shortcut to delivery.

🇷🇼 The question Kigali is putting on the table is no longer whether African leaders can articulate reform. It is whether they will hold the line when the political winds turn.

Good question.

Firstly, @NELFUND is not stalking you the moment you graduate. You will not even be on their radar for two years after NYSC. Calm down.

Secondly, after those two years, the question is simple. Are you working or at least finding your feet. They are not chasing you around with interest like loan sharks.

Thirdly, if life is still doing you somehow after those two years, they are not dragging you. It is more like “we understand, go and sort yourself out.” There is a level of humanity baked into this.

Fourthly, if you are earning, the approach is not punishment. It is structure. Small, almost forgettable deductions. The kind you barely notice. Like another subscription you did not cancel.

Fifthly, if things go south again and you lose that income, they are not unreasonable. Everything pauses. Nobody is squeezing water from stone.

Sixthly, in the unfortunate event of death, the loan dies with you. No drama. No transfer of burden to your family. It ends there.

Seventhly, and this is where I will be blunt. Why are you already afraid of paying back something that is designed to help you get ahead. You are still a student and you have decided, in advance, that you will not make it in two years. On what basis exactly.

At some point, it stops being caution and starts looking like self sabotage.

Amid the flood of felicitations following my convocation as Overall Best Graduating Student of LAUTECH, I find it necessary to address the stir around my NELFUND appreciation post. I accept the praise, life changing offers and the backlash, in good faith. Still, it is only fair to set the record straight.

I hail from a village in Osun State, raised in a modest family of five. I attended public primary and secondary schools, not by choice, but because even the most inexpensive private schools were beyond our means.

Even then, survival itself; food and clothing was a daily struggle. I walked miles to school each morning, while my parents laboured as jacks-of-all-trades to make ends meet.

For nine defining years before I entered university, we lived within sight of basic amenities yet beyond our reach, no electricity, no television; just lanterns and candles. Against these odds, I earned a scholarship and now this distinction.

In my third year, a coursemate’s father, someone I had once tutored academically, gifted me my first smartphone which I am still using till now. On several occasions, lecturers, moved by quiet compassion, provided me with clothing. There are many other instances, too numerous to recount.

So, I say this plainly, not all of us are born with a silver spoon. Some of us climbed the ladder by holding on to every rung of legitimate support we could find.

As an engineering student aspiring to make academic history, should I resort myself to blaming my family’s financial situation for my inability to afford fees and essentials like a reliable smartphone or laptop needed for skills and certifications?

For me personally, NELFUND was not incidental; it was instrumental and to acknowledge what helped one’s journey is neither propaganda nor misplaced allegiance. It is simply an act of appreciation.

I just went through the comments and quotes on Oladepo Caleb Okugbenga's post. He credited NELFUND for supporting him in becoming the Best Graduating Student of LAUTECH, but the dishonesty in some replies is alarming.

You can criticize the Tinubu government for many things, some of it valid, but when it comes to NELFUND, let us be honest. It is a lifesaver.

I am a 500-level medical student at UI. I have been on NELFUND for three consecutive years. They recently paid my school fees and the fees of thousands of UI students this session. That is not a rumor. That is real. NELFUND currently supports students with full academic fee payment sent directly to the school and a monthly upkeep allowance of twenty thousand naira paid directly to the student.

Now let me address the common lies people spread.

Some say it is a loan, so it is not helpful. Yes, it is a loan, but it is interest-free. Tell me one loan app in Nigeria that gives you zero interest.

Others say the repayment is a burden. But repayment only starts after you have graduated, finished NYSC, and found a job. If you are unemployed, you pay nothing. If you lose your job, the payments stop automatically. That is not a burden. That is safety.

Some people claim NELFUND has no impact on students. That is simply false. I am an admin in a group helping students apply successfully. Many higher institutions and scholarship bodies now advise students to take advantage of this loan so they can use their own money for other needs that bring financial stability.

Another lie is that the government made education expensive just to introduce the loan. Federal schools are still highly subsidized. We all know what our mates in private schools pay per session, millions of naira. Our fees, even after adjustments, are a fraction of that.

Most of the people throwing shade at NELFUND are not even in school anymore. They have no idea how the scheme operates today.

Let me be clear. I am not saying we should stop scrutinizing government spending. We absolutely should. But when a good initiative works, we must have the maturity to acknowledge it. NELFUND is keeping real students in school. That is a fact.

Let us not allow dishonesty to rob others of this opportunity.

OPERATION HADIN KAI TROOPS FOIL TERRORIST ATTACK AT KUKARETA, INFLICT HEAVY LOSSES, RECOVER ARMS CACHE

Troops of the Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), under Sector 2 in the early hours of 23 April 2026, successfully repelled a determined terrorist attack on KUKARETA location. The attack, which commenced shortly after midnight and lasted until about 0300 hours, was met with a swift and coordinated response by vigilant troops who executed a deliberate offensive-defensive action, effectively containing the assault and forcing the terrorists into a disorderly withdrawal.

During the engagement, troops inflicted heavy casualties on the attackers, with 24 terrorists neutralised so far. Ongoing exploitation of the battlefield has led to the recovery of a significant cache of arms and ammunition, including 18 AK-47 rifles, 3 General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG), 2 PKT automatic anti-aircraft guns, 3 RPG tubes, 2 mortar tubes, 4 hand grenades, 18 AK-47 magazines, and large quantities of belted 7.62mm ammunition for PKT systems.

Troops recorded 2 personnel wounded in action, who have been stabilised, while one reinforcing armoured tank sustained damage with all tyres blown out during the engagement. Exploitation operations are ongoing to recover additional bodies and equipment along the terrorists’ withdrawal routes littered with blood trails and medical consumables. This successful operations highlights the resilience, combat readiness and fire superiority of OPHK troops in denying terrorists freedom of action. Operations will continue with sustained offensive pressure to consolidate gains and decisively defeat all terrorist elements across the Joint Operations Area.
