Adv. Glynnis Breytenbach of the Democratic Alliance (@Our_DA) said that as the country commemorates #Constitution30, it must confront an uncomfortable truth.
"For millions of South Africans, the promises of the Constitution remain just that — promises. The constitutional dream promised to South Africans 30 years ago is not being kept."

Teachers are the foundation of every successful society.
Every doctor, engineer, entrepreneur, scientist and leader began their journey in a classroom, guided by a teacher.
Today, at the FirstRand 2026 National Teaching Awards Winners event, we celebrate educators who go beyond the call of duty and remind us of the extraordinary excellence that exists in classrooms across South Africa.
Their dedication continues to shape lives, strengthen communities and build our nation.
6 of the top performing teachers who were recognised at the National Teaching Awards will tonight make their way to Denmark for a project-based international study tour to Denmark, courtesy of the FirstRand Foundation.
I wish all of these educators well and hope that they will return to South Africa recommitted to building an education system where every child can learn, thrive and realise their full potential.
This evening, we bid farewell to the 6th Umalusi Council. Tonight provides an opportunity to recognise the contribution of those who have served on the Council over the past four years and also serves as a moment to reflect on the importance of Umalusi's role within South Africa's education system.
To the outgoing Council, on behalf of South Africa, on behalf of the 485 000 teachers and 13,7 million learners in our schools, I thank you for your service.
To the incoming Council, we wish you every success.
And to Umalusi staff, congratulations on your Silver Jubilee, may the next twenty-five years continue to strengthen the quality, credibility and integrity of education in South Africa.
Fitch’s upgrade of South Africa from BB- to BB shows that the responsible economic path pursued at Treasury is delivering results.
Our path of fiscal discipline means lower borrowing costs, slower debt growth and ultimately more resources for public services and economic growth.
Today the @CommZA announces two major milestone towards improving leadership stability within the portfolio.
The first is the appointment of three Deputy Director-Generals in Department. For the first time since the DCDT was established in its current form, the department will have a full complement of permanent DDGs and I look forward to working with the team to unlocking opportunities for South Africans.
The second is the appointment of the SAPO Board, which is a significant step towards SAPO exiting business rescue and will help restore stability in strategic oversight and governance.

This is a major next step in the fight for accountability at PSiRA.
The SIU investigation into the failed R130 million PSiRA training project has now been signed off. That matters, but the real point is this: it happened after relentless DA pressure and sustained parliamentary oversight.
We pushed for this when PSiRA’s leadership tried to avoid hard questions.
We pushed for this when the Board tried to have me recuse myself as Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police.
I refused, because Parliament’s job is oversight, not silence.
This matter has never been about political showboating. It is about public money, failed governance, thousands of people who were promised training and opportunity, and a regulator that must be held to the highest standard.
We welcome the SIU investigation, but this cannot be the end of the road.
The PSiRA CEO and CFO must still be placed on precautionary suspension while the investigation runs. Documents must be protected. Witnesses must be protected. Public funds must be recovered where possible. If wrongdoing is confirmed, there must be real consequences.
The DA fought for this step, and we will keep pushing until this matter is fully exposed and properly dealt with.
Accountability cannot be optional.

After visiting schools across South Africa and abroad, I have become even more convinced of one simple truth: there can be no quality education system without quality teachers.
Teachers restore hope to families, break cycles of poverty, and show young people that their future is not determined by their circumstances.
They are not only educators. They are merchants of hope.
This is the dividend of the GNU’s fiscal policy, which is built on an alignment between Treasury, the Presidency and the DA. Would be impossible with the EFF or MK in the government.
Micro-economic reforms, however, are too few and too slow. If we want growth, we need more, faster.
