@schowardjd (9) Key takeaways for patients and caregivers
A shagreen patch is an important skin clue that may point to tuberous sclerosis, a genetic condition that requires a broader medical assessment.
@schowardjd (7) Management: Shagreen patches themselves are typically benign. Management focuses on the broader TSC syndrome: Dermatologic options for cosmetics may include laser therapy or topical treatments in selected cases. Regular surveillance for associated organ manifestations is key
@schowardjd (6) Correlation: Patients with shagreen patches may have other TSC-associated manifestations such as angiofibromas (facial), cortical tubers, subependymal nodules, renal angiomyolipomas, cardiac rhabdomyomas, and glaucoma. An evaluation is often warranted in suspected TSC.
@schowardjd (5) Diagnostic significance
Major feature: Shagreen patch is considered a major diagnostic criterion for TSC in many revised criteria sets (e.g., 2012 International TSC Consensus Guidelines). Its presence supports the diagnosis, particularly when other features are present.
